Is 1084 considered a "beginners steel" or is it "custom knife" worthy?

Can someone someone tell me what the FG stands for on Aldo's 1084? I don't see it on his sight, but everyone keeps adding it here.

Fine Grained. Aldo's steel comes with a bit of Vanadium in it to help keep grain size smaller.

I remember when Aldo found a truckload of 1084 steel. It sold so well and was in great demand that he started having a small steel mill produce it in batches. I bought 100# of his first run. For a part-time maker like me, it is a lifetime supply.

I am pretty sure that the "found" steel was the 1 inch round edge Schrade stuff. I still have 40 bars of that stuff. Good stuff and it etches dark.
