A firearm is a weapon. A knife is a tool. It does not mean a knife can't be used as a weapon in a pinch but techincally it is a tool. No different than a cresent wrench that could be used as a club in a pinch. IMO> On the reverse the firearm could be used as a tool in a pinch also but it is, from the ground up first and foremost a weapon.

I always think that a knife is a tool, but i also keep in mind the law over here in Britain, if there was intent to use it to harm someone, or someone felt threatened, its a weapon, and that applies to literally anything you can own.

Knives and guns I consider to be tools. You use a tool to get a particular job done. You use a hammer to drive nails when building something, an axe to chop firewood, an ice pick to break up ice and so on, you get the idea. A soldiers firearm is a tool to get a job done. His job is to kill the bad guys. A hunter uses one to kill game for the freezer. It's only a weapon when used for the wrong reason.

I lean towards it being as tool and secondarily as a weapon.

I'm no anthro' or paleontologist but I hazard a guess that the first knife/cutting implement invented in pre-historic times was probably intended as a processing and manufacturing tool; to cut, slice, carve, skin, etc. Technically speaking the human body is basically a walking 3D target of vital areas (in a combat scenario or if you're a martial artist). Any implement, which includes your own body, has the potential to bacome a weapon if it is used in this specific fashion.

That was my first thought:

Do you mean is one knife build as a weapon or as a tool or is it meant to be one or the other?

For me, if it is not build as a weapon, that would be a double edged dagger, it is a tool. Whatever advertisement may do or say or imply just to sell. As you said: A brick is made to build houses. Even though advertised as something else it is a brick, made to build houses.

A knife is a tool.

Be happy if you have to use your knife as a tool. Those tools are toys. weapons aren't.

If someone buys a walking stick to use as an aid, it is a tool. If someone uses it to brain someone who is trying to rob them, it then becomes a weapon in my eyes. Same for anything.

I was reading a thread somewhere about what kinds of knives the military folks use and the uses. The conclution was they use them as tools. Theoretically I could use my knives as weapons but I would choose one of my guns if I felt the need for a weapon. I think one of the reasons people see them as weapons is that they were mans first weapons. And true, they are used as weapons in this day and age as well but the knife is a popular item and it's overwhelmingly used as a tool. The fact that it "can" be used as a weapon is irrelevant, so can many other objects.

I've never used a knife as a weapon in my life, I have only ever used a knife as a tool.

"Officer, my knife is a tool."

Here in Canada, calling a knife a weapon is just inviting seizure of said knife by a police officer, especially if it is not in full view. "Concealed weapons" are illegal here.

Of course knives can be weapons!!!!!! What a silly question!

Almost everything can be used as a weapon. A brick, a key, a wrench, et cetera. But IMO a weapon is something designed to use as such. If a knife was designed with fighting in mind, it is primarily a weapon. There are a lot of such knives on the market.

I say tool. If not then a kitchen knife a weapon. A box cutter is a weapon. A pizza cutter is a weapon. A chisle is a weapon, and an AXE is a weapon... Get it? Yeah I know you can use one that way. I can also throw a brick at you, but generaly they are used to build things.

Amen!

A weapon is only a kind of tool, IMHO. A knife doesn't become a weapon until it's carried or used with the intent to injure or kill another person.

LOL, I saw the cat fight in Prac Tac that made you start this thread USAFSP, lol, it cracked me up. I don't even waste my time in there anymore, I'm no commando, and I'm technically not in the military yet, but I don't know where I've ever seen such a collection of self-proclaimed military experts in my life.

Some knives are made to be tools - but can be used as weapons. And some knives are made to be weapons - but can be used as tools. Is a knife a tool or a weapon? both, but we tend to use it much more as a tool.

For me 99% of the time a tool. However, if I was in an SD situation I would flip open my knife instead of look for a brick or other impliment. (unless it was right next to me)

I see them as tools. I'll avoid repetition and spare sharing my logic. Cheers.
