I view my knives as tools. Though like runninmike said, everything is a weapon. To me, my hammer is also tool, to my thumb it's a dangerous weapon.

Hi, I'm new but they are all what you bought them for UNLESS you use them in a way that will cause harm. Then they are weapons and if you need it then use it. If you use it then make it count!

i like steel and mechanics and quality and neat things. i like my knives because i can handle and enjoy them. i would feel bad about cutting somebody i do that to myself enough. what gets me is the sale AND advertisement of these sharp g-10 etc pointed blade like things that are advertised that they cannot get detected my a magnatometer. whose side are these people on anyway????????????

Primarily a tool. If weapon ever becomes an option I must have messed up really bad to let it get that way.

Both in one under any circumstances.

plan no useless move, take no step in vain.

As a Marine-everything is a weapon.

Just out of curiosity, do the Marines teach you how to kill someone with a condom? Because we haven't gotten there yet in the Army, lol.

TOOL first and foremost, then again, is a weapon a tool?

I use my EDCs alot. Most who know my think of me as someone who is kind, gentle, soft spoken & well armed!. Even got a crappy spare to lend out (aka Ricky two knives :) blush) no joke

Anything can be used as a weapon. But, a knife designed to function primarilly as a weapon would be very light, flexible, and very efficient at rending flesh. It would be designed along the lines of a steak knife; what is a steak if not flesh?

Most of our sporting and tactical knives are not designed that way. They are heavier and over-engineered to cut rope, wood, and other heavy fibrous materials. They are designed to help us with fieldcraft rather then personal combat; as such they are primarilly tools rather then weapons.

a knife is a tool, a sword is a weapon. of course as said weapons are tools. Knives are designed to fuction as some type of tool, mutipupose to specific swords were designed for one purpose killing humans. Guns are not just use to kill other humans nor are most of our weapons.

Toss an (apparently) used one at a guy :barf: and while he's retching, take him out! :D

Intent.

The classification of anything can be summed up with that word. I carry an automatic knife or a balisong. This is a tool. I also carry a serrated rescue blade. This is a tool. I carry a SAK. This is a tool.

I also carry a Spyderco SPOT in easy reach hanging from my backpack strap.

This is a weapon.

A tire iron used to change tires is a tool. A tire iron used to cave in somebody's head is a weapon.

An SUV used to drive the kids to school and soccer practice is a vehicle. An SUV used to run over a halpless bystander is a weapon.

A glass bottle used to hold liquid refreshment is a recepticle and drinking device. A glass bottle, which is then broken and used to cut somebody is a weapon....

...Intent is the key.

Planterz nailed it! :D

And while one or two even agreed, it all comes down to intent of use... afterall, it's an inanimate object first and only after a conscious entity picks it up and utilizes it are we able to determine the difference between 'tool' and 'weapon'...

to use condom as weapon by a super strong large condom, place over head, (the one attched to the neck), suffication will follow. other uses could include waterproffing an explovie device, a garot or simplly stuffing it down somebodys throat.

My Knives are all tools first and thought of as a weapon only as last resort type of thing.

I'm with longbeachguy. I only knife fight when the moon is full. Otherwise, I'm using my knife to open stuff, whittle things, etc.
