Is a slip joint an advisable knife to carry?

T.he implied question I read was is it advised to carry a slip joint for self-defense? While they lack the speed of a flipper or thumb stud in my opinion can be quickly opened with both hands. While I personally have considered them as sharp tools as opposed to weapons, to each its own. They imbue a tradition that modern knives can't match.

Nothing in the OP hints at self defense. Okay, he said "swiftness". He also said "everyday purposes". A slip joint is definitely not a self defense knife, unless you want to join Danke42 in the ER for the same reasons.

My issue with slip joints isn't the lack of lock. Which is much of a muchness.

But one handed open/closers are easier to put back in my pocket.

So I am more inclined to open the knife, use it . Then put it away.

A slip joint. I tend to open the knife, use it then rest it open somewhere for the next time I need it.

And that creates a risk that someone will sit on it.

So for work, where I tent to use my knife the most. I use liner locks or button locks. That kind of thing.

I might suggest being competent with a slip joint for self defence if you were a self defence minded guy.

Rather than assuming you would never need to use one.

Currently my main EDC is a Civivi Elementum version 2 and a Victorinox Tinker Deluxe. But I’ve been thinking recently about one specific knife that I have, a Case Trapper (full-size, not the mini) BSA edition and I use it a lot for camping but not for everyday purposes. Should I daily carry it? I prefer the swiftness of a flipper, but slip joints just last way longer and have more character to them.
Yes, you should carry it one day a week. On each of the other six days, you should carry either a flipper, a lockback, an OTF, a side-opening auto, a balisong or a fixed blade.
Bottom line: you need more types of knives.
;)

If that's all you've got or can legally carry . Maybe .

It's still never going to be as effective as a fixed , or folder with very strong lock .

Same goes for emergency use and some types of work environments .

I’d pick something other than a knife altogether if slipjoint was the only option and I felt the need to carry something for self defence.

Did you just misassume me!

Crocodile Dundee 2 - a slip j is a necessity for self defense !

Combat is too unpredictable to premeditatedly introduce such an unstable variable into it. By which I am referring to the lack of a lock on the supposedly self defense designated slipjoint knife. Too much could go wrong in the chaos of a self defense situation, which is why I dismiss the idea of “being competent with a slip joint for self defence” out of hand as a tactical error.

Caveat: perhaps there is a design that could change my mind, but I haven’t seen it.

If I had to use one.that way I'd want a LionSteel gitano..... That lock does inspire some confidence!!!

I'm a Millennial. I've heard it is illegal for Millennials and Gen Z's to carry slip joints. Is this true?

Depending on how you classify the year, I am technically a Millennial/X-ennial since I was born in '81. I prefer Proto-Millennial, First of my Name if you make me move out of my more Gen X ways....but that would put me more in the unsufferable hipster class of the generation. In that case, a $300 slip joint paired with an IPA, high fade with a beard, and ironic flannel is acceptable.

Honestly, i like slip joints. I go through a phase every year where I think I can switch over to one. I carry it, love it, find it useful...then go back to a frame lock or OTF. I guess my life is too fast paced to handle two handed opening. I DO keep a dedicated Boker in my desk drawer for eating my apple at lunch, so they are good for that I guess.
