Is a slip joint an advisable knife to carry?

No lock

Depending on how you classify the year, I am technically a Millennial/X-ennial since I was born in '81. I prefer Proto-Millennial, First of my Name if you make me move out of my more Gen X ways....but that would put me more in the unsufferable hipster class of the generation. In that case, a $300 slip joint paired with an IPA, high fade with a beard, and ironic flannel is acceptable.

Honestly, i like slip joints. I go through a phase every year where I think I can switch over to one. I carry it, love it, find it useful...then go back to a frame lock or OTF. I guess my life is too fast paced to handle two handed opening. I DO keep a dedicated Boker in my desk drawer for eating my apple at lunch, so they are good for that I guess.
sorry you're a millennial. this new made up sub grouping makes me chuckle. if you werent alive in the 70s you're a millennial. even born in 1980 I consider a millennial.....

Combat is too unpredictable to premeditatedly introduce such an unstable variable into it. By which I am referring to the lack of a lock on the supposedly self defense designated slipjoint knife. Too much could go wrong in the chaos of a self defense situation, which is why I dismiss the idea of “being competent with a slip joint for self defence” out of hand as a tactical error.

Caveat: perhaps there is a design that could change my mind, but I haven’t seen it.
Absolutely. Having the right gear is the most important thing.

Yeah saw that in the other thread. I love how the supposedly blend in lifestyle is the one that sticks out the most. Put a bicycle helmet on that guy, shave his beard for the respirator, add five inches to his height, and he could be a Canadian knife maker.

They imbue a tradition that modern knives can't match.
This is a tautology . True by virtue of the very definition of the words used . But meaningless otherwise . 🤨

Edit : Sorry , that came out a bit harsher than intended . But , sometimes things do actually evolve and improve functionally .

IMO , folding knife locks are a great advance , especially the best of them .

Safer , faster , more capable , better functionally for any serious use .

I was born in 80 and I've always thought of myself as Gen-X. The media I consumed growing up supported this view as well.
I'm always down to see massive beef..... Curtains 😁
Greasy!

Release the spinewhackers!
Let’s see how strong those locks *really*are!
:D :D :D

Kidding aside, it’s a matter of the right tool for the job at hand.
One a day to day basis, a knife to have in your pocket, the SJOTD is a solid choice. Boxes, string, blister packs, apples & the like are the slip joint’s domain.

I’d reach for another knife to clean fish, cook dinner or run off to a war zone (not likely).

-Boomer out.
:P
