Is AI going to be the demise of human intelligence?

Every time a new technology comes along (steam power, electricity, internal combustion engine, etc etc ) frightened old men are sure it will be the end of the world as we know it. The AI five years from now will not resemble what we see today, will it be perfect? Of course not, but it has the capability of altering our world in ways we cannot even imagine---yes in good ways! Quit whining like Chicken Little and educate yourself, you might be surprised at what you discover.
Chicken Little?

If we continue to develop our technology without wisdom or prudence, our servant may prove to be our executioner."
— Omar Bradley

Even the lion protects himself from the flies.

I run AI for enterprise use. I feed it and maintain it. No alarmism here. It will replace people, even me. Period. Full stop.

The second swim lane is simply, what to do with a surplus of assets (people) no one wants, but that requires maintenance. The people will have to go.

It’s a people question, not an “old men vs young bucks” question. I have money, and guns, I’ll be fine. The kids today won’t, and I have none, so I won’t care.

I can be smug and flippant, too.

I never claimed to be intelligent and am having fun with AI

I work as an Enterprise Architect scoping out AI led integration. I have over 30 years of IT Ops experience in the software industry. AI is here and it is actively replacing human assets. I am not going to speculate what it will be, but I do confidently know that change is rapidly coming and it will be an order of magnitude change. So "hang on your your butts" and prepare as you see fit for extreme change.

Playing devil's advocate, I'll "agree" with you....
If we think of A.I. as a living thing for conversation sake......things must continue. Species continue, or at least try to.
Maybe it wouldn't self destruct the World?
Maybe.

Great post, especially the money and guns part, lol, right there with ya though I don't have much money...spent it all on guns, ammo, knives, and a core supply of bourbon, tequila, and cigars.

AI may take a lot of corporate jobs, but in the end it's a force multiplier for individuals who want to code their own things, i'll say it now: AI in the hands of millions of amateurs combined with millions of laid-off (and pissed off) pros, will be the death of closed-source software in general.

For context, two rival AIs, Samaritan (speaking through the little boy in an earpiece) and "The Machine" (speaking through Root through her cochlear implant):

Between them, those guys have about a quarter of the PPE they'd need to be in my shop when I'm working. Good thing space is less harsh than a knife maker's worskhop! ;) 🤣

No need for AI with that one, just unplug it. Then ask your kids or grandkids how to program it. Worked for me when my parents had one. Now I don’t have a vcr anymore….or it may be in the storage boxes in the garage. 😜
It's a joke.
😉
