Is anyone else underwhelmed by Spyderco's 2014 lineup?

Im a Spyderco guy but was disappointed when I looked at the 2014 catalog. I thought I was the only one. The only thing that caught my eye was the Sage 3. I am still looking forward to seeing reviews for some of the new models. I would like to have seen at least some different colors in their FRN models especially in their ZDP knives....why in only British racing green? Oh well.

More excited about potential sprints than anything new in the 2014 catalog. I think we are seeing a lot of VG-10/Back lock/Seki City knives because Golden and Taichung plants are already producing a ton of product and don't have the capacity to add much more currently.

Awesome! I thought I was gonna have to start saving for a knife I cant afford.
Looks like it can wait.
Why did the OP say it was?

I hope you don't believe everything thats posted here, or anywhere on the net for that matter:p
Some enjoy starting a thread that may get heated and garner many responces.
Hopefully this one will die out soon.

This one sure sounds like it was created for that reason.
Personally, I really like VG10 so the "new lineup" sounds great.

S90V Yojimbo is the only one that is catching my eye for 2014. Luckily I bought all the ones I wanted this year, six so far so I'm good on Spydercos. Do like the Manix XL, but I have too many similar knives already. If it weren't for them I'd get one.

I bought my Benchmades last year so I avoided this big price increase I'm hearing about. 33%? Is that true?

The Spyderco Yojimbo 2, CPM-S90V Steel, Peel Ply Carbon Fiber Handle, Plain Edge, KnifeWorks Exclusive is a MUST for me too but won't be out until late this year! Fortunately, just today, I received my Spyderco Manix2 XL C95CFP2, CPM-S90V, Peel Ply Carbon Fiber Handle, Plain Edge, KnifeWorks Exclusive and it's superb!

Sad but true. Dealers cannot sell below MAP which is 15% off MSRP. Before they were selling Benchmades at 35%+ off MSRP!

being underwhelmed by spyderco's line up is like being underwhelmed that a baseball team made up entirely of all star players didn't get any new exciting trades.

when your line up has been regularly head and shoulders above the competition, people start judging you based on your past achievements. it's impossible to always one up your previous year. but until a company can actually compete with it, I think they're fine ;)

It can be a tough business,if they are to conservative a lot of people are going to be unhappy,to outlandish(2014) the same effect....sometimes they re-release and the new version leaves out a lot of what people liked it for in the first place(Terzuola Starmate).

In the old days they offered some designs that I didn't care for at all,but the knives were reasonably priced with at the time pretty cutting edge steel-if you didn't like you weren't out that much money, but recently their prices have gone up quite a bit,but they still make a hell of a product and I will still buy their stuff just a little more selectively.

it's not realistic to expect every new model to be better than any before it. think of it as a Macy's or Bloomingdale that sells excitement and variety each year. don't think of it as a Boeing plant that rolls out continuous improvements.

I have to give Spyderco credit for innovating and coming up with new designs. Some companies have a handful of models and only update once every few years. Other companies unveil a design and then take 3 years to bring it to market.

Maybe the Tatanka, but because of NY knife laws, I can't. (Tatanka has 5" blade)

NY state has no length limit on blades.

I'm personally in for the firefly. I like the Roc, but I HATE beadblasts, so I might pass on that one or get it and mod it.

I find I am underwhelmed by most of Spyderco's offerings. I have two now and wish I wanted more... that is... I like the quality of the two I have, but spyderco tends to make designs that cater to mall ninjas. The designs are very aggressive and not overly aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Their most basic design of the narrow handle with the wide blade makes the knives look off balance. To each their own I suppose. As long as their knife designs continue down their current path, my money goes elsewhere.

I don't have a lot of knowledge about Spyderco at all, but my impression of their knife design is that, for the most part, they focus completely and entirely on utility and practicality, which I respect - triangle blade (To make room for the Spyderco hole.), the most basic grinds/bevels, or no grinds/bevels except the very edge itself. I just looked through the Knifecenter catalog of everything-Spyderco - so many of their knives look almost identical.

However, I do like these:

Schemp Tuff (My favorite.)
Szabo, (Awesome.)
Yojimbo (Awesome.)
Battlestation (Awesome.)
Roc Cleaver (Awesome.)

Vallotton

Double Bevel (Somewhat.)
Ed Schempp Navaja (Somewhat.)
Native (Somewhat.)

I think that the Spyderco hole, as practical as it may be, messes with the design flow of a lot of their knives - either on the blade, due to having to design a blade with it in mind, or both.

I agree, I give them credit for trying out new designs as well. Unfortunately the designs for 2014 don't do anything for me. I am intrigued by the Firefly and will buy a SB Stretch and one of the Clip-It tools, but that is about it.

That new fixed blade the Serrata looks interesting to me. At .20 thick, seems like a fatty for spyderco.
