Is anyone else underwhelmed by Spyderco's 2014 lineup?

I updated the initial post to reflect the non-discontinued status of the Gayle Bradley.

Let it be known that I have no intention of trolling or causing heated reactions - I'm just not a fan of VG-10, lockbacks, or the overall design or prices of the upcoming VG-10 knives. If I was trolling, I would say something like "VG-10 SUCKS YUO HAVE FAILED ME SPIDERCO!!!111"

Everyone has their own preferences, but this is a rare instance where Spyderco seems to have completely missed all of my preferences with every single new offering that isn't a dealer-exclusive sprint run. With ZT's upcoming lineup primarily consisting of knives that are too big or too expensive, Benchmade's totally unnecessary price hike, and Kershaw's lineup yet to be announced, looks like this will be a dry year for me.

...And by dry I mean custom. We'll see what gets announced at Blade and Shot show, though. ZT keeps coming out with things that make me tingle in funny places. Spyderco will do it again, I'm sure.

Just preordered a Spyderco Pete Carey Firefly in vg10. Cannot believe that I paid that much for a vg10 blade. Hopefully it will be finely suited for a smaller classier knife. Definitely gentlemans folder. It have better be perfect F&F or I am sending it back for that type of money.

The Tatanka is exactly what I've wanted (other than a 5" Military) from Spyderco going back a long way. Hopefully it's the first step toward actually making a supersize Mili. I love the Ti Pingo, the Firefly, and half the other stuff this year. I'd probably get a dozen knives if I were still collecting.

OK, I realize I'm late to the party. Up to now I've not paid much attention to pricing of the 2014 lineup but I received a KC email today, followed the link to the new Spydies page, and got my first look at street prices.

Are they crazy? Knives made with VG-10 and G10 should not run that high.

Underwhelmed? Not at all... actually pretty stoked. They had me at "Kiwi4" and "Manix2 FFG." (Is it just me, or did the conversion of the Manix2 to FFG go quietly unannounced? And yet it's such excellent news.)

I hear you, though, esp. re: your disfavoring lock backs. It's low on my list of "fav. locking mechanisms," but thanks to Spyderco, I don't let it get in the way of my enjoying an otherwise amazing knife. (And VG10 just works for me - not perfect, but darn good and soooo easy to sharpen.)

They even left a few "gee, if I had unlimited funds" blades in there for me, like the SB stretch and dragonfly. I have a VG10/FRN stretch... and an FRN, and a Nishijin/ZDP189 D.fly... so I'll probably, regrettably, pass on those. But darn they are cool. And the Tatanka and firefly are on the wish list, too. So in the end, I'm if anything relieved that there's some VG10 and lock back sprinkled around, because otherwise, my kid might never go to college. ;)

Wheres the Para2 sprints? There was the Green Para2 dealer exclusive for 2013 and nothing else. A S110V/Navy Blue G10 Para2 would be the bomb.

Meh, P2 sprints are getting boring to me. I've had a few. Blue & orange safe queens don't work for me even though it took a few to finally realize that. Can't argue the secondary value though.

"MeH" Well I'd rather have another Para2 sprint than things like the "Spyderco Jot Singh Khalsa sprint" that's not exactly flying off the shelves is it..lots of dealers still have those in stock.

Good question. They might be announced later on in the year, but as dealer exclusives. I'm still waiting to see what becomes of a CPM-154 Military in CF or a Para2. I started a thread on it some time ago and Sal did sound a bit interested in it from what I recall.

That Spyderco Jot Singh Khalsa is just too ugly! The Spydie hole looks like a tumor.

Spyderco needs more folders with flush Spydie holes like on the Techno.

I agree, the flush fit Spyderhole is very nice. Examples are on the Bradley Air, Manix2, Native, Southard, Centofante Memory, the older Centofante knives as well. The Lum Tanto (folder) is cool too. I actually passed on the Vallotton subhilt folder because the Spyderhole just didn't appeal to me, it didn't go well with the flow of the design over all (to me of course). The Szabo folder, and the Firefly is almost the same in the hump being a bit much for me to handle

I'm also not into the Jot Singh Khalsa at all whatsoever lol, but it is based off of a traditional Sikh design and from what I understand it is customary for them to carry a knife like this. I don't recall everything but there's a story behind it, it wasn't just some gimmick design... Something for everyone... I'm sure they knew that it wouldn't fly off shelves.

Guess I have to resurrect an old thread. I just saw the price on the worker sprint....are you kidding me? I'm sorry, but I was interested until I saw what they are asking for the thing! Anyone else think it's ridiculous?

Yeah, I know I said I was totally excited for some of these, but when BladeHQ sent me the preorder email and I checked out the prices, I just couldn't justify them when so many other great knives (that AREN'T friggin' VG-10) are available or upcoming.

Sounds like you are a bit bored with cutlery at the moment maybe

Buy a bike ... that'll suck up any excess loot you may have in exactly the same way a Spyder jones will :)

Spyderco's offerings are no different than anyone else's to me. I like a few of the designs, dislike a few and could care less about a few. The only ZT I've ever really liked was the 0550. I got it and haven't found anything made by ZT that has interested me since. Benchmade? All their designs look similar to me but I like the Griptilian and the Presidio. I bought them both and I haven't found another Benchmade that does anything for me since. At least Spyderco has more knives in their lineup that I like than any of the other makers and I own more Spyderco knives than any other brand (except for Case).

Mall ninja? What...are you nuts? Spyderco is virtually the antithesis of mall ninja, black-bladed, flipper-snapper, spring-assisted pop tart nerf-knife.

Oh...and I like VG-10 as much as any other blade material. It can be made real sharp. It's just a knife. It's made to cut, not inflate the self image and caress the ego.
