Is balance in a knife important to you?

In having lived in the Pacific rim and traveling to the Philippines as well as other asian countries over the last 50 years.. I can go either way when it comes to the balance point of a knife.. In the JEST ( Jungle environment survival training) that I have been through in my younger days and spending a good amount of time tramping through the jungle environment.. I prefer to have a blade that is a little blade heavy for chopping and some survival needs.. But while attending the course, we are told to have a smaller knife to do the light work and in this case, I prefer a blade with the point of balance right in front of the guard for the ease in use.. As a medic in the military back in the last century, I got into the habit of attaching a filipino bolo or machete on my ruck while carrying a smaller fixed blade with a blade length of 7-7.5 inches on my web gear incase I had to drop my ruck and would have a back up blade for other needs as situations arose.. When I transitioned out of the military ( aka retired) I stayed in the Pacrim area and went into law enforcement, but the bolo stayed at home while I carried the smaller 7-7.5 inch fixed blade as part of my duty gear as the area where I patrolled was still in the jungle environment and I had to have the capability of cutting limbs of trees to get our vehicles out of the mud and jungle muck when the newer troops would venture off the hard pack roads and to 4 wheeling in our patrol vehicles.. We also had to dispatch several indigenous wild life species that crawled on the ground from time also..

JFK,
I have a few voices in my head and a few years back, I had a couple of close associates tell me that I should write a book.. But I figured that there are already a lot of fictional biographies on the market already and the memories of my old @ss has nothing to share compared to others who were in the military during the same time I was in..

I have been writing a little here and there.. subjects that have interested me over the years.. I primarily write on the edged/impact weapons training that I have had as well as some thoughts on personal security.. But since I have had a serious merde block of thoughts lately, my writing has tapered off.. I wrote a few articles on personal security that pissed off several individuals in australia a few years back and that gave me a good laugh.

Depends on the blade—for a chopper, you obviously don't want the balance point too close to the grip. Nobody really does that these days, though. Simple stuff, but important.

Anyway, when I custom-made a big knife for my wife, I kept the weight away from the tip so it wouldn't be too heavy for her. Why a big knife for her? Well, she literally asked me: 'Why do you think girls should only use small knives? I want a big, long one!!40c872576e2f49e4f0d3eaa72a005e76.jpg
