Is BudK a scam site/dishonest or just crappy products? Worried- I just ordered...

Just want to say thanks so much for all the suggestions! I am reading through everything now and I have a lot of choices to research and think about. I'm learning and I'm sure will continue to learn- lots of fun being a mama to a boy. :)

I did end up making a trip to the bank- the charge had not even shown up yet so they said they had no way to stop it, but I went ahead and cancelled the card and they issued me a temporary card to get me by till the permanent one comes in. For future reference, I will use credit cards for online transactions as there is a lot less hassle involved.

Also, will take advice about googling the name of company name with the word "scam" to check company out before making purchases. Definitely a mistake on my part not to have done a little more research first. Lesson learned and glad to be on the forum with lots of helpful people.

Thanks so much, guys! :)

Per the Federal Trade Commission:
Q. Am I obligated to return or pay for merchandise I never ordered?
A. No. If you receive merchandise that you didn’t order, you have a legal right to keep it as a free gift.

Q. Must I notify the seller if I keep unordered merchandise without paying for it?
A. You have no legal obligation to notify the seller. However, it is a good idea to write a letter to the company stating that you didn’t order the item and, therefore, you have a legal right to keep it for free. This may discourage the seller from sending you bills or dunning notices, or it may help clear up an honest error. Send your letter by certified mail. Keep the return receipt and a copy of the letter for your records. You may need it later.

Q. What should I do if the unordered merchandise I received was the result of an honest shipping error?
A. Write the seller and offer to return the merchandise, provided the seller pays for postage and handling. Give the seller a specific and reasonable amount of time (say 30 days) to pick up the merchandise or arrange to have it returned at no expense to you. Tell the seller that you reserve the right to keep the merchandise or dispose of it after the specified time has passed.

The FTC is referring to 39 U,S, Code Sec. 3009:

(a) Except for (1) free samples clearly and conspicuously marked as such, and (2) merchandise mailed by a charitable organization soliciting contributions, the mailing of un*ordered merchandise or of communications prohibited by subsection (c) of this section constitutes an unfair method of competition and an unfair trade practice in violation of section 45(a)(1) of title 15.

(b) Any merchandise mailed in violation of subsection (a) of this section, or within the exceptions contained therein, may be treated as a gift by the recipient, who shall have the right to retain, use, discard, or dispose of it in any manner he sees fit without any obligation whatsoever to the sender. All such merchandise shall have attached to it a clear and conspicuous statement informing the recipient that he may treat the merchandise as a gift to him and has the right to retain, use, discard, or dispose of it in any manner he sees fit without any obligation whatsoever to the sender.

(c) No mailer of any merchandise mailed in violation of subsection (a) of this section, or within the exceptions contained therein, shall mail to any recipient of such merchandise a bill for such merchandise or any dunning communications.

(d) For the purposes of this section, “un*ordered merchandise” means merchandise mailed without the prior expressed request or consent of the recipient.

You may want to email "Bud K" and state your case with specifics. Doing so, provides more evidence than a phone call. Furthermore, point them to this thread, if it was my company, I sure would want to publicly clear this issue up.

... For future reference, I will use credit cards for online transactions as there is a lot less hassle involved.

This is what I do Bethany. I have one specific CC that I use for online purchases. It has a very low limit ($500) so that if someone does get hold of that card's info and try to use it, I won't be out very much either in money or credit rating. Keep your membership here active. As your son grows and develops his interest in knives, this is a good place for advice. KnivesShipFree has some interesting videos about kinds and knives. Might be worth a look. Derrick & Co are highly respected members here on BF so you can have some confidence in what they say and sell.

Also... wouldn't hurt for mama to carry a nice utility type pocket knife. Maybe we could help you find something useful to carry for those times when a sharp blade comes in handy.

I know this is an ancient thread... buuuuut.... if you are still looking for a good first knife that is a little cooler (and safer imo, i had a run in with a brand new leatherman juice that didnt have a lockback and cut myself deep when i was 14, it folded on my pinky. Yes i was being stupid trying to cut something with a stabbing motion but thats all it takes. What can i say i've learned allot since then and im glad thats all that happened), is classic and can do a lot more than a swiss army knife (in terms of knife stuff). a type of Mora that i guess boy scouts or someone use allot but they have a blunt tip, so you cant really stab with it. They are still sharp and can slice so you still have to teach knife safety ( which i would do with even a training knife/sword) but imo having that blunt tip makes it allot safer for everyone involved.

This is a pic of the classic, the tip is a little more pointy:

And this is the modern (not as cool imo but a waaay more blunted tip)

So if BudK is not a credible site, where is a good site to get paper weights ;)

By the way, where are they located?

I am just responding to this ancient thread because BF has summoned me and like a genie I appear

If you do indeed receive the boxes from FedEx, don't open them and either reject them if you happen to be their during delivery or bring them to a FedEx office and say it was delivered by mistake and you want then returned to sender, and you shouldn't have to pay shipping back

So I have not gone through this whole old thread, but in my experience budk is not a scam site. They sell cheap junk for the most part with lots of glitzy advertising and over the top descriptions of their wares. However, they do deliver the items that you purchase. If you think that the samurai sword for 11 bucks was "hand forged by master craftsman" or that the chain blade will "vanquish your foes" .... Well that is on you in my opinion.

just got a Bud K catalogue, junk, skulls, didnt see anything a Real knife person might want! Buy Swiss Army for a good product that actually does something.....
