Some of you might remember Rhett Stidham. He was a long time knife dealer who collected the remnants of closed knife factories.
He passed away a few years ago. Stories used to fly around about the buckets of parts that Stidham collected. He personally told me he had enough jigged bone handles from old factories to fill up the bed of a pickup truck!

He gave a bunch of blades to Tony Bose, and Tony made a knife for him out of one of them. It was sold during the estate sale, and eventually wound its way to me a couple of days ago - always happy to have something made by Tony!!

So what is it?? A Custom Knife? What name encompasses what it is? Or is there no word for it?

Custom. Custom to me does not have to be sole authorship. I have seen more than a couple that were one of a kind that were not. A turning point of it for me is if it is factory made, think Case Bose. But this is opposite. The Blade is factory made the rest Bose. Some might call it modified, some may say customized, I say custom.

My thoughts don't always match those of others, but that is what I think.

Whatever you want to call it, it is beautiful and once more I am jealous of one of your knives Charlie.

I'd just call that one a Tony Bose and be tickled to have it! All kidding aside, nice acquisition Charlie. I look forward to reading the comments about this.

I'd call it a treasure! I'd probably put it in a strong box, bury it, make a treasure map, then stump around on my peg leg with my eye patch pealed for those who would want to steal my buried treasure!

That, or I would carry and use it!

I'd probably call it a custom too.

I would call it a "Custom" of a different sort. While made or put together by a master cutler, under his control and supervision, hence custom, part of it is from NOS, from a factory. Great knife Charlie!

I'd call that a Tony Bose "parts" knife. Whatever it is it's pretty cool.

A traditional midtech? Lol

Custom has my vote, but by the original midtech definition, it would land there.

I would honestly describe that knife as a "Tony Bose Special" because from where it began - it comes from more than just an "ordinary" T Bose ( sorry - I know thats almost swearing ) - it has different origins - with names attached!

Thats a lovely knife and an incredible find Charlie,

I remember an exchange between nifnutt (Rhett) and Upnorth, maybe Tony will chime in and settle this.

It is wonderful.A custom ...of a sort.Is it a one off? If so I'd call it a cannibal ie canniblised from other knives rather than scratch built.
In Australia such a thing if it was a motorbike would be a "rat" bike.
Anyway woddevva!!.it is a beautiful looking knife.

I would call it a custom Charlie. Tony built the whole knife around a single blade and man are you lucky to have it.

I'd call it awe-inspiring. Beautiful, Charlie! A real treasure with an amazing history, that's for sure!

I do believe you have a Bosed Stidham.

-- Beautiful knife, Charlie! Congratulations.

Now that is a nice catch Charlie!! Please bring it to the Oregon Knife Show in April so I can see it in person! That would be a real treat. :)
