Is it best to keep your pocket knife in a pocket sheath?

I don't know if it is "best" or not. It's quite possible I am doing it wrong. What I do is carry my traditional knife vertically in my back pocket beside my leather wallet. Though occasionally it will fall down and lie horizontal under the wallet.

The wallet itself is of a relatively soft leather and there's nothing else in the pocket, so it gets both protected from keys/change and is still easy enough to get to.

I have a very nice KSF leather pocket slip that came with my purchase of a Case Back Pocket knife through the Exchange here (thanks Blaine!), and it is perfect for a larger knife like that. I do use that sheath when carrying that knife, usually in my other back pocket by itself.

I've never had any issues with pocket lint.

I like to clean and oil my knives, so getting pocket lint in the liners just gives me more of an excuse to play with (and clean) them!

I keep them loose in my pocket alone, as I don't want them to get *too* scratched up.

I sometimes use a sheath much like "Pipemans'". Around here we call them Buckaroo sheaths but any name will do.

Most of the time though, I don't use a pocket sheath of any kind. I just blow any dust or lint off the knife when I pull it oiut of my pocket to use it.

I guess it just comes down to experimenting with different ways to carry your knife until you find the best way that works for you.

The double pocket sheaths you guys are showing are awesome! I need one myself. I generally do carry in a pocket sheath. However it is mainly to help retain holding the knife in my pocket. Lost a very nice knife wearing a pair of slacks one time. Pockets were super slick I guess and it fell out. The leather creates just enough friction to keep it in place.

I carry mine in a simple thin suede pouch. The suede is grippy so it keeps the knife upright in my pocket, avoiding the sideways knife problem. It's also quite thin so it doesn't add any perceptible thickness to the knife when it's in my pocket.

The pouch originally started out as one of these W.R. Case pouches, but I cut the top off and sewed the sides up to give me faster access to my precious :)

I fold a handkerchief down to about a 5" square and put my pocket knife in the middle and fold it over the knife once, then into the pocket.
It protects the knife, and also the pocket from getting holes.

I have not noticed any locking issues with my Kershaw and it is either in my hand or on my walker with brief pocket time HMMM not much lint on the walker maybe that's the reason.

I have my money wraped around my credit cards/ID and my knife on top followed by a rubber band holding it all together. It gets everything together and secured. As an added bounus the rubber band has enough grip to keep everything vertical and in place so it doesn't slide around or move. And I keep nothing else in that pocket (front right hand pocket) so it is actually pretty well protected.

As for lint and dirt, I've never had a problem with the few months I carried a traditional this way, or when I carried a modern folder in the same pocket. And I generally just use compressed air as part of the cleaning process so I don't get any real build up.

I was given a pocket sheath along with a very nice Remington barlow by Jon Slider. Thanks again Jon! I had never used one but I find it to be real handy. I have used it with my Sunday-go-to meetin knife and I really like it. It holds the knife vertical and protects it at the same time.

That's such a great and simple idea! I don't know why I never thought of it. I wouldn't necessarily worry about getting scratches and wear on the knife, so much as preventing the holes, as well as being able to more easily locate the knife in pocket. I used to consider possibly reinforcing the pockets themselves, but this idea is a lot easier, IMO.

I've carried knives on a daily basis for over 50 years. Up till a half dozen years ago I'd never used a pocket sheath. I had no problem with losing knives out of my pocket, nor have I had problems with lint. Every so often I just take a deep breath and blow the lint out of the knife.

In the last half dozen years I've experimented with using a pocket sheath. I find it works well for holding a larger knife vertical in my pocket, but overall I prefer not to use one.

I will use a belt sheath if the knife is over 4 inches closed length. I don't generally use a belt sheath for a smaller knife, though I did years ago when I had a job driving a truck.

i dont use a pocket sheath. but i also dont buy knives that i would mind getting lint or even grit in. i oil the pivots if they get gritty and swab them out with a rag or something if they get dirty.

I mainly use the Ron Ryder/Buckaroo/Pipeman type sheath. But, use a weave of four strands of 50lb super braid fishing line to go around my belt, down into my pocket to hold the sheath vertical. That way it is almost invisible no matter the situation. Have several different detailed construction sheaths that I use also. The super braid is my latest modification. 300

Here is leather and super braid fishing line methods.

It depends on the knife but not because of lint i am just worried About some getting chipped when I have other stuff in my pocket

This thread has some interesting sheaths. Love them. I usually just like tossing my knife in my pockets but looking into a pocket slip to leave in my briefcase so its not flopping around while I care the bag,
