Is it just me? Damascus?

i like damascus, it looks really beautiful.

my favorite is raindrop. to me it just looks "right"

Damascus, mokume, damasteel,I love it all!I wish I could afford more of it.

I like damascus steel just fine, as long as it's used tastefully.

My wallet can't stand it, however.

The way Mcusta creates damascus is not exactly the same as "classic" damascus, but I do think these "laminated damascus" Mcustas look good for a reasonable price, plus they are stainless with a well-performing VG10 core.

In general it indeed requires a tasteful designer when combining materials (in fact this is true for any kind of designs, not just for knives!).

And, my limited Victorinox damascus Pioneer is juuuuust wonderful as well !

only thing i wonder about is what are the differences of damascus steel, high carbon steel, and stainless steel in terms of edge holding , strength and flexibility... the aesthetics arent much a factor for me but damascus can look quite interesting at times lol

Well that would depend on what kind of steel is used in the damascus (assuming other factors the same).

Unlike most who like Damascus I much prefer random pattern to a patterned Damascus. I have two of Rob Johnson's random pattern Damascus knives and couldn't be happier with them.

With a random pattern it can be anything that I imagine it to be.

my $0.02;

six of one, half a dozen of the other.

given the first thing I look for in a knife is functionality, funky damascus steel just isn't very high on my priority list.

that said, if i could easily afford damascus, there are definatly a few examples i'd happily buy.

never been a huge fan myself. Expensive, and not functional for everyday use, at least the damascus I like anyways.

Damascus is beautiful steel (although how to make the real deal actual 100% bonafeid damascus has been long forgotten ) I prefer simplier lines. All the hypnowheels, rounds etc are too restless. I prefer round wave-like patterns. Of course there are exceptions but this is generaly speaking.

I like damascus. I got two unfinished billets on the bench right now. One 1095x15n20 and one 1084x15n20..You really appreciate damascus when you see what goes into making it..Espically when you have to do it the hard way, one hammer blow at a time I like I do..
I like the look of low layer counts very well myself.

I am about ready to get me my first damascus steel knife.

I would have to pick it out rather than order it.

I went a little overboard buying fancy pattern welded steel folders for a while, especially the mosaic stuff, but I eventually grew a bit tired of it and now prefer a more understated look, though I still like some of the more subtle patterns like this Damasteel. It's still busy, but I think it complements rather than overpowers the lines of the blade grind.

I have to know who makes this its gorgeous. Des Horns? where does one buy a knife from this maker?

I'm quite curious what's damascus blade looks like if you use them. I mean how the scratch looks like?

Doesn't really do anything for me. I don't find it ugly (with a few exceptions--every so often I'll see a blade that makes me go "ewww"), but I also don't find it particularly attractive, either.

I'm not much of a fan of Damascus either, but there have been a couple patterns i just love.

I usually don't like the look of damascus, because so often it's used just for the sake of using damascus, without taking into consideration the design of the whole knife. To me, a damascus blade on a Sebenza is like pimping out your work truck that you haul cinder blocks and tools in.

Mammoth bark ivory and damascus knives seem to be a huge "fad" right now, and IMO so many of them just look like turds. But that's just my tastes; I tend to prefer clean lines and uncluttered designs (and shiny stuff). Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The one time I almost always like damascus is when it's in a feathery pattern, like the Dean and Bump bowies posted above.

With regular, heavy use, the etch on a damascus blade may wear or get polished off, and look like satin-finished plain steel in the affected areas.
