Is it just me or Cold Steel knives are general either low quality or overpriced ?

Just tired of seeing them. Every company compares themselves to cars.

Aww, and I was all geared up to keep going with car puns...But I guess if you're feeling gassed out about them...

We'd do well to shift the focus of this discussion, anyway. It's gotten really off-track, we should steer it back onto course.

Nyuk nyuk. :D

In all my years on BF I've never heard car company analogies before this one. I have to agree at the risk of being a party pooper, it's a pain in the *ss. Why not compare to guns or something like that?

Also they do not reply on emails.
Have sent them two. Still no reply.

Nobody does where your emails from, it's usually some freak with a pic of a Russian babe wanting to exchange email pics with an emaill address different from the one they used to contact you. Nothing personal. :p

I have a few CS fixed blades and my Voyager that I purchased to replace my
Endura. Yes LT's marketing is over the top, but as stated it IS his company. I find them to be rugged as hell, over priced, maybe some models but their is
also the CS Special Projects catalog that has some models for less than retail and other sources such as Cutlery Shoppe.

I like my CS knifes , not my favorite but I dont have favorite company , good knifes for reasonable price (if you not paying MSRP )

Cold steel makes the best mall ninja items by far. oh and they also make some decent knives. I paid 30$ for my steel lined recon 1, a tank of a folder by any standards. The AUS8a has held up much better then i thought it would.

Come on, they do make some pretty cool stuff. Who else makes spears and blow-dart guns and "torpedos?"

Know nothing about russian freaks but emails without any attachment. For example Spyderco is always answering with a good grace. Thank them.

Just yanking yer chain there Pizis, but kinda not. :D

Cold Steel is kind of like Benchmade, it's rare to get a reply to an email but telephone Customer Service has been excellent for me.

When Cold Steel asked me to email them a picture of an issue and they expected it, then replied immediately - otherwise I've had no luck either.

Kinda understand your joke cziv, but kinda not :)
Thank you anyways :)
I`ll try to telephone them.

every time cold steel comes up we get a ton of replies. well good or bad cold steel is in the screen. i have had some cold steel products that were very good & some with marginal quality. the only company i can remember with almost no duds is spyderco. of couse great eastern has maintained exceptional quality. admittedly lyn's personal appearance & his videos certainly contribute to his negative image. he's no sissy athough he may look like one. also some of his early introductions were cutlery history. the trailmaster & his tanto. i believe he single handily caused the tanto craze.[i've never owned a tanto blade]. as many of you i ca'nt help but laugh when i watch some of his videos but i believe his pluses outweigh his minuses.

In my experience Cold Steel makes good products that focus on performance at a price that is affordable for most people.

Someone give me a link to a sub hilt fighting knife like the cold steel OSS knife that is made out of the same or better materials for the same or a better price. I doubt anyone can find such a link and that is why Cold Steel exists.

I also must add that I like their videos and think its funny that seeing their knife actually cut something or get put in a vice is 'over the top' but no one makes a big deal about the fact that most knife reviews on the web don't even show the knife being used at all.

Hmmm about a billion cold steel knives out there and people continue to post the one video about the trailmaster and that one picture with the recon scout. Oh, and why do I never see a broken one in San Mai? I want to see a broken San Mai Trailmaster.

you mean this one?

I have owned several Recon scouts and trailmasters. I even got a san mai trailmaster for dirt cheap at the time. The Carbon steel versions held a great edge but were weak. two broke an inch back from the tip, one broke at the handle and 3 had huge divit chunks removed frm the edge larger than a quarter and all I did was what I did 1000's of times with my SHBM. But I only did it a few times with those. here is what I did with the SHBM, which the CS knives failed on.

Having said that, I consider CS knives a pretty good knife when you get them at big discounts. They have the sharpening aspect down. They are by far the sharpest knives I have seen from the factory.

I haven't had that much experience with cold steel compared to some of the members on this forum but from my own personal experince I've come to the conclusion that cold steel puts out some solid knives for the price. My aus 8 recon tanto was a freat knife for 65 dollars. The tip was very strong and it held a decent edge. The SK-5 kukri I owned chopped like a beast but had poor edge retention compared to SR-77 or SR 101. I recently purchased a dogfather + sheath for less than the CS kukri and the edge retention, toughness, and overall value of the dogfather far surpasses the CS kukri.

I haven't tried SAN MAI III and probably never will because of the fact that for the proce I could purchase something form the scrap yard, swamp, or Fallkniven that I believe will perform better. That being said I would like to have a SM3 Trailmaster if I found one cheap.

Lynn thompson has really put me off their products and at the moment I own no CS but I would buy again if the price was right. They make a lot of funky products that you can't buy from any other makers.

So I have concluded that if you want a cheap beater CS is always an option. But I will always spend my money on Busse Kin first and the Fallkniven and then CS. So unless I'm getting a monster steal on an item or want something I know I am going to destory/ abuse then I will go with cold steel. But let's face it a 270 dollars SM3 Trailmaster is never going to out perform a 270 dollar SRKW M9, no matter what LT tells you.

Very well put, Dennis. I completely agree with you on this. Also, I think his overly abusive 'testing' (which he has done since square one...the tanto through the car door back in the 80's) kinda' started all of the over the top testing prevalent on the internet and by several other companies.

I find many of their knives to be great deals, especially right now. Look at the prices on their TriAd folders. If any of the other 'folder' companies came out with that lock, you'd be broke often paying double for nothing more than a slight upgrade in steel. And their San Mai 3 Combat Classics are a steal in my opinion.

I've owned 3 or 4 CS knives including a Trailmaster, Recon folder and a Spartan. I think they are pretty good stuff for the money they cost me. Are the the best? Nope. Not the worst either IMO.
