Is it just me or is someone running his mouth a bit too much?

If it's the axe vid I'm thinking of, it had nothing to do with the axe.

He took a SPLITTING axe, and tried to buck a tree that was laying sideways, resting on the boughs on one end, the whole thing was on a thick bed of leaves, and he hacked straight into the wood, rather than at an angle. He did everything wrong, then concluded that axes suck.

I like watching his vids, because even if he's wrong, he's entertaining, IMO.

Agreed Cpl. It he was standing on uneven ground on a slope trying to balance himself. He usually says "I don't take an axe because of SAWC (size and weight constraints) but if you want to carry a 3 lb axe, go for it."

Really a 15-19" Wetterlings would be plenty, don't need a full size axe for most tasks.

I agree on the entertaining part.

I have enjoyed his videos, but have my issues as well. As for the axes, the 19 inch wetterlings is nice, but lately my machetes have been competing hard with it. There's nothing like a good 35" axe for tearing a tree to peices.

I'm careful as all get out...but axe injuries do happen, are trip enders, and as a solo tripper, they can be death.

I carry the hand chainsaw to avoid the need for the axe and my blades do the rest. but to each his own, and yes Wetterlings are fantastic axes, I've handled a few.

Maybe nut'n travels alone in the bush? I don't know I've never made it thru one of his videos! lol!

Ok, I see. I don't have tv, so I'm not really up on this Dual Survival. I have Cody's book and I like it. Thanks for clarifying.

let me help you out with that - http://www.youtube.com/user/DualSurvival#p/a
all episodes so far should be up there.

As for Nutn - he is entertaining. When he has a point it's entertaining to learn, when he doesn't it's entertaining to laugh your ass off.
And honestly if I were to meet the guy, I'd probably with that I had an axe to hit him with within the first 10 mins. Mostly because of the "I'm not the end all expert" and then talking and behaving like you are.

As far as his reviews go - sometimes he goes too deep with checking things out to get the facts and details, but if it has a purpose I don't mind the 40 mins. And sometimes he doesn't, blasts a product without even looking up anything about it.

Survivalism is devolving into some sort of Jerry Springer meets American Idol type of bullturdery. Who gives a shit about this nancyboy controversy?

I like his videos, having said that I take them into account along with other videos. If I am researching something I will watch several videos and follow the common thread in their reviews. Yes sometimes he gets sidetracked but hey who doesn't?

Just to stop flaming before it starts and all that - I posted it here because of flaming. Ppl here are down to earth and know how to talk and listen. They don't fall under the fanboy mentality.
AS for Nutn - he has some good points and some points where one wants to take an axe and smack him over the head a couple of times. He isn't an idiot but it's like he refuses to think at times.

EDIT:
Here's the vid where he says that it was Dual survival - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4sbxYj5XpU

yeah buddy i am with you on this one. If discovery considered him for dual survival its because he can talk and is a good entertainer as we have all seen on youtube.
His review on the RC 3 is better than any other ive ever seen anywhere..but then he goes and says that a long knife such as the junglas or in his case the RTAK 2? is easier for processing firewood and building a shelter than an axe or bow saw. That WD-40 he uses must be some super awesome formula developed just for him because there is no way that you can beat the brute force of a good sharp axe in the wintertime...at least up here in Canada.

apples to oranges i guess.

From what I can remember Dave cited nutn as a partial reason he went"common man". All that nice clean expensive gear, doesn't keep you alive or show people you know what you are doing.

It really doesn't matter who they paired up with Cody Lundin, the other guy is only there for comic relief as the Master goes about his "slow and easy" lessons on actual survival without stunt segments, (though the barefoot thing is kind of a stunt, especially when cultures throughout the Northern Hemisphere did in fact make shoes, sandals, and boots and used them, and so his reasons for not using them are anti-historical and at times, anti-common sense).

Since Lundin won't be an asshat in the bush, they needed their Bear Grylls Lite wacko to club porcupines to death and mess with Africanized killer bees. I respect Canterbury more than Grylls, but really, I get the sense he is sometimes hamming things up, probably at the prodding of his producers and the director, while Lundin gets to play the "straight" man.

Completely disagree....

Completely disagree....

They're both obviously able to survive just about anywhere. I don't see much Hamming in any of it. Cody is overly hippee, but that's his style, and it's mostly valid. Dave's approach to things seems highly realistic. Whereas cody gets all spiritual/mother earth about stuff, Dave just thinks "i'm hungry" and wacks something over the head.

Most people act like total flipping fools when you put a camera on them. If you doubt me, turn on the local news for 45 seconds. These two seem to keep it mostly in check. I'll give anyone a moment of egotism on camera.

They have their diffrent styles, obviously. But they're both on a very short list of people I wouldn't mind getting lost with. Bear is not on that list. Though, having about 150 pounds of good meat at the onset of a survival situation wouldnt be a bad thing.

Well Cody is Cody. Not other way to describe him and you can't really compare him to anyone else. The barefoot thing is by choice, but lets not forget that he is from Arizona, where he has dangers and obstacles but not really like in a wet or jungle environment. And to me it makes it just more interesting to see how he copes with it all, because lets face it - we all need a chill pill from time to time for a lot of reasons and that dude is chilled out even though he knows exactly what can happen.

As for Dave, I don't think it's a character. In his YT vids you can see the same intensity, the same mentality and attitude. I don't think it's a character that tries to get ratings. And we shouldn't forget that he is army trained, and their training revolves about getting things done and getting out of Dodge. And by listening to him, it seems that he learned primitive techniques because they would enhance the overall level of his skill.

Well that's my 2 cents on those 2.

Thanks for the YouTube link. I didn't even realize this show had started airing and just watched three episodes back to back - The Shipwrecked, Swamped and Panic in the Jungle episodes. So far I'm really enjoying these as much as or even more than Les Stroud's Survivor series.
Anyone know if this is showing on Discovery Channel in Canada?

Thanks again!

Bottom line to ANY program on TV is it's entertainment, doesn't matter if it's a cute FOX news chik reporter trying to be serious about all the death and carnage in Afghanistan or Dual Survivor. TV shows exist for ratings. Most of the public is dumb so they play to that. Entertainment, for the most part, has nothing to do with real survival, real intelligence, ground truth, etc. I'm amazed that we continue to even have this conversation on these forums about TV shows. I put zero faith in them although there will be a nugget of two of something useful along the way.

Well there's no countering this pithy and comprehensive point.;)

Wasn't planning on arguing the point. Just disagree with your assessment. I think that anyone who follows the show can see Dave not only holding his own but emerging as the leader of the pair on a more than regular basis.

Viewing Cody as the "wise leader" is laughable to me. Of course he's more capable than me in the woods but a lot of his antics are just as questionable if not more so than Daves.
