Is it normal for a high end knife maker to ship out knives with cold shuts?

That's an $800 Damascus Knife? Personally that doesn't look good for the price if it's $800. I'd bail if possibly.
$800. I know they have knives a lot more expensive but for me, that’s quite a bit of money.

Is this a custom knife maker? Or a manufacturer? The way they use "We" in their correspondence sounds like a knife factory.

Their website says they are a family of 3 generations making knives out of their shop. Here’s part of what’s on their website
Each of our knives and swords is 100% designed and built by us in the USA. We handle every aspect of the knifemaking process in-house, from cutout and grinding to heat-treat, finishes, sheaths and sharpening. We're constantly researching new and better knifemaking methods and the latest advances in materials to ensure we deliver you the best custom knife available.

We also stand behind our knives with an industry-leading Lifetime Warranty. Choose a category below to get started!

If you click on Lifetime Warranty it takes you straight to their site lol.
Oops I edited it but I don’t care. I’m not trying to dog them out but they did know I don’t know a lot about knives other than I like them. They tried to make me think this was normal and it was a sign that I have a great knife.

That maker is a member of this forum. Maybe send him a link to this thread and let him tell his side of the story? From what i’ve seen though he does appear to have a rather good reputation.

Again, my intent isn’t to dog them out. They made a mistake. Offered a new knife after trying to talk me into keeping the flawed one (in my opinion).

I have a good friend of mine who deals with a lot of custom knife makers from Africa. I reached out to him and asked if it was normal. He said absolutely not but also knew the maker I bought from and assured me they’d make it right.

They have done that.

My original lost was to determine if they were telling me the truth about cold shuts are a way to tell you have a true Damascus Steel knife. I thought that doesn’t make sense. That’s why I began reaching out to people who could point me in the right direction.

It's Dawson Knives. As for the cold shut, you are right to return it. It would've been unacceptable in the 70's, and it's certainly unacceptable now, especially on a knife $800 is being asked for.

Perhaps it just slipped through, Dawson's been around for a long time, and they been making the move toward small shop the last few years, and that can lead to growing pains.

believe it just slipped through and I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Only slipped through if the blind guy did the final inspection with winter gloves on :). From the picture, there appears to be a handle blemish as well. I'd go for a refund if it's not too late.

There is no handle blemish. That’s a shadow or something. But I agree they dropped the ball and messed up. I’m giving them another chance though.

Beautiful knife, great lines. I know nothing of the maker, nor do I care.

But in regard to the situation, the notion that they are somehow using real Damascus and that a defect is proof... is crap. Just an attempt to sell you on keeping it.
Essentially they made the knife, found the defect, and hoped you wouldn't care. But was prepared to exchange it in the event you did care. Certainly a case of cutting corners, but we all do it at time so I won't call the kettle black.
