I have similar thoughts.
I love my 17. The shorts handles are amazing and fit my hands very well. The blade is as Ethan says, a perfect length for a medium knife. I'm confident I can do anything I need to with the 17... except one thing.
Carry it in my pocket.
And so the BK-14 remains my number one blade. If I am wearing pants, it's in my pocket. If I were ever to find myself in the infamous "one knife situation," I would have the Eskabar. Especially now that the zytel handles are available, the 14 can do most tasks that the shorts can do. In Ethan's challenges, I've used the 14 to build a shelter, make various other tools or weapons, and even uprooted a tree. I could have done any of those things with the 17, but the 17 wouldn't have been carried in my pocket.
One day, while carrying the 17, I found myself in a very wooly area with lots of multiflora rose, and I found myself missing my BK-9 as I tried to cut a trail through the rose vines with the 17. It just didn't have the reach I was used to, and I got some thorns in my hand.
When I head to the woods, I prefer a big knife or a hawk for greater reach and more chopping ability. So the BK-9 is my number two blade.
Therefore, the BK-17 ends up as number three. Not carried on my person, but on my pack or in my truck to be available as a back up, or to be used just because it's a sweet knife and I'm close to my truck.
Even in the Post-Tweener era, I'm still a chopper/little knife kinda guy, so the medium knives are not my first choice.
Did I mention I still love the 17?
