Is it worth buying multiples of certain knives?

Hey everyone,

Got a question for you, but first I'll give you a brief backstory.

I've got a few knives in the mail at the moment but currently edc a gayle bradley 1. I love the gayle bradley 1 knife and the thought of purchasing another one has crossed my mind a few times. My question to you is...is it a waste of money to buy multiples of knives in the same steel?

If you use it all the time, and it will be difficult to replace (discontinued or Sprint run) I'd say it would be good to have a backup in case of loss, theft, or just using it up, if you decide you don't want it later, you could always trade or sell it

No, it's not a waste of money. Typically, a second knife of the same kind is a back up and is not used. If, down the road you decide it's silly to have a duplicate, you can sell it unused. It might be one that's out of production by then and desirable.

Personally, I generally do not like collecting more than one model of any particular knife, regardless of the type of blade steel used, but I know that there are others who collect as many variants of the Para Miliary 2, Military and the Manix 2 (as well as other models) as they possibly can.

I'd rather spend the extra $ on a different knife than just buying another one identical to one I already have but if you want to buy the same knife w/the same steel and blade type for "back up" that's certainly not unusual and I've done that in the past with knives that I thought I'd use or lose.

I think it's entirely up to the individual ... I have duplicates of a handful of knives ... some are the same steel or even identical knives ... others have a different steel or a variation ... but if I find a knife I use alot and like I most likely will have at least one extra.

If you can afford it, I say do what you like. I have multiples in the same steel (different aesthetics). I also have some that are the same model different steels. I did this for the simple fact having many knives (and guns for that matter) makes me happy. If something makes you happy, how could it be a waste of money.

If you’re not a collector but still buy it as a back up, it’s still not a waste of money IMO. Always be prepared, right?

Exactly identical? At most two I say. More than two, it would be a bit excessive to me.

Ajack60 nailed it ! :-)
Think of duplicates as a form of insurance
against the possibility that
a certain favorite knife model
may be dropped from the product line up
In the future.
Though i figure more than 2 might
signal some sorta awakening
or start of a renaissance phase
In a knife collector,
where one can never get enough
of a good thing.
Just imagine this, would one ever regret marrying identical twins ?? ;-)

The answers will be predictable. Some will give you an unqualified “yes” answer, others will give you an unqualified “no” answer, others will give you a qualified “yes” answer, others will give you a qualified “no” answer and yet even others will philosophize without really answering your question. Nothing here is uncomplicated or straightforward (other than the statement that “Blades made of sharpened steel are usually sharper than blades made of unsharpened, room temperature cheese.”). Welcome to BF.

Haha thanks, I appreciate the welcome. I guess you're the philosophical type.

In the past I have bought extra copies of knives that I really liked, typically knives that were hard to find so that I would have a spare or backup in case I broke or lost the first one. What would typically happen would be that I found find another knife I liked that could take the place of the other one.

As an example I liked the Benchmade Stryker and it being out of production I bought a spare. Then they bring out a new model of the Stryker so I could buy one of them if I needed a spare. As another example I like the Spyderco PM2 in M4, so I bought a spare. Then they bring out a version in CF M4, and then a version in DLC M4, so if needed to replace my primary I could buy either of them and wouldn't have needed to keep a spare. And there will be other worthwhile models available such as 4V.

But still if there is something that you like and you worry about losing or breaking it, it is worthwhile to have a spare.

Not a waste at all.

My favorite knife is a Massdrop Keen, in purple. I love it. Sometimes, I don’t feel like rocking purple. I have a gray one for those days. Happy as can be with that. I’d rather switch things up and still be carrying my favorite than switch it up and carry something else*.

*one of the quirks of being a reviewer is that “same old” feels refreshing, because switching it up becomes the norm. I’ll barely carry my own stuff this month. Too much coming through.
