Is it worth getting an expencive spyderco knife?

Serious guy is in Europe, so who knows what his situation was in his country's military. Beans or not, he doesn't like Spyderco knives. His opinion, he's entitled to it.

He's a knife fan in Europe who thinks Solingen is a knife company; not a city in Germany so famous it's know as the "city of blades". His opinions are skewed and beg for cross examination.

Yes, it is worth it to get a nice Spyderco. I recommend trying out a Native 5 FRN or Delica 4.

I have been using them for years, and they are well worth the cost.

One of these should knockout almost any can of beans you care to throw at it..

I was told early on "Don't buy a five dollar knife unless you have five dollar fingers." Poor design, parts, construction, or heat treating are disasters waiting to happen. I've owned Spydercos since 1994. As a police officer I sawed through walls with them, cut seatbelts, and jimmied open trailer doors with them. They always held an edge well and were easy to touch up. I gave many as gifts. The only concern I ever had about them was if the SpyderHole weakened the blade. After a fairly disasterous twelve page thread, I can say the BF community has not found it to be an issue even with moderate abuse. I have had more expensive knives rust in my pocket in a day in humid South Carolina. I have never had to return a Spyderco or send it back to the factory for any reason.

I am retired and on Soc Sec, but even I don't consider a Spydie to be expensive unless/until it runs more than $200.

OP, a Endura or Delica is a great place to start. These two knives have been a standard in the Spyderco lineup since the 1990's.

Both are relatively inexpensive and will give you a good indicator of whether you will want to spend more.

Hello everyone, I would like everyone's opinion on getting expensive Spyderco knives, I am talking endura, delica, or maybe even something like a paramilitary 2. I would not like you guys to recommend other knife brands, I want to limit this thread to spyderco. Thank you all very much for helping me out! If you have any stories you would like to tell about you and your spyderco please share, thanks!
Yes, Spyderco knives are most certainly worth it.
If you have your doubts in regards which knife to start with, then go check out the models you mentioned, that you were interested in.
Be careful though; one Spyderco is rarely enough for most people...as evidenced by this thread.
Good luck with the search. Remember to post your Spydie here:D

I know my opinion is in the minority, but I am just not generally a Spyderco folder fan. I've handled a couple of their fixed blades (Mule team and bushcraft) and was very impressed by the fixed blades, but don't like their folders. Primarily, I am just not a huge fan of the plastic/GRN handles they use. On a knife in the $60-70 i find it cheesy compared to the nice aluminum scales you'd get from Kershaw or the G10 scales from Buck on the knives in that same range. You have to get up into the $100+ category to get G10 handle scales.
Also not a huge fan of the lock back they use on most of their knives. The ball bearing lock is great and I wish they used on more of their knives.
Far down on the list of reasons is the look. For some reason, and I realize it's my own irrational thing because function should always come before looks, I just can't get past what I perceive to be looking goofy.

Again, my opinion is in the minority.
Yes, you are in the minority, again as evidenced by this thread. But not caring much for folding Spyderco knives and offering a rational argument is just fine in my book, as opposed to a nonsense rant.

I LIKE Spydercos - you dont, but its YOUR money to do with what you wish.

Further more you hit the nail on the head - there are others who prefer fixed Spydies over folders from the same company and truth be told, I was also mostly into the fixed Spydies for a long time (but how can you look at a CALY and say that it is not a thing of beauty!:D)

They used to issue those little can openers, with the meals ready to eat.
I believe, that you might be confused as to what constitutes the MRE - Meal Ready to Eat.
Its only the modern day self-heating meal, which carry that label, so to speak -- not just any MIL ration through time.
MREs dont come with the P-38 - they are not needed. See Lefty's pic of MRE below.

BTW The TROLL label should not be bandied about;

Trolling

The art of deliberately, cleverly, and secretly pissing people off, usually via the internet, using dialogue. Trolling does not mean just making rude remarks: Shouting swear words at someone doesn't count as trolling; it's just flaming, and isn't funny. Spam isn't trolling either; it pisses people off, but it's lame.

The most essential part of trolling is convincing your victim that either a) truly believe in what you are saying, no matter how outrageous, or b) give your victim malicious instructions, under the guise of help.
Trolling requires decieving; any trolling that doesn't involve decieving someone isn't trolling at all; it's just stupid. As such, your victim must not know that you are trolling; if he does, you are an unsuccesful troll.

........but if not trolling, what then is this;

I wouldn't be paying such a price tags for folders that are (to me!!!) of funny futuristic designs and shapes, that I would call simply mall ninja stuff.....

Sorry,no intentions on making angry Spyderco fans and owners, but to me,these blades are not worth more than few bucks, I could possibly pay 20 to 40 USD a piece, not more.....

I am not much of folders fan, neither user, simply because I expect blade to be tough and rigid, so fixed blades are the only option...

If there are any folders that I find to be worth of money and of well designs and construction vs price tag, than it is traditional designs such as Buck 110,or many Case folders and so on,knives that cost 50-100 USD but will last and do the job expected....(no I am not recommending them to you,as per your wish!)

Spyderco makes awfully expensive folders that looks like something that just fall down from alien spaceship.

Just my honest 2 cents

I always figured Spyderco was the "Apple" of knives. Good quality and specs, but you pay more for the design and the brand/logo. The first two are appreciated by all, the latter are a matter of individual taste.

This is coming from a guy who doesn't own a Spyderco (not yet, anyway). So perhaps an interesting point of view of someone yet uninitiated in the SpyderCo "Cult".

I'm not sure how I feel about the design myself, especially since I have been developing a thing for knives with a more classic look lately. That said, I have to admit I have been secretly eyeballing the PM2 myself, for a while.

IMO You are wrong. Quality doesnt come cheap + you get what your pay for. Thats just my opinion though.

But since You dont own a Spydie, maybe reserve your judgement til you buy one and then get back to us. We are always interested in new Spydie converts......or the opposite, as long as they are armed with rational arguments, which you no doubt will be;)

You are right, of course. I can't judge without having used it. But perhaps judgement is a strong word to use in this context. I meant it more as the impression I got from the brand by looking at the knives and pictures.

That said, it's almost impossible to thoroughly try knives for me. I don't have anyone in my immediate surroundings who is into knives as much as I am. I occasionally visit vendors, but their selections are so limited most of my orders are made on the internet. Even when I do visit vendors, you can hold the knife and open/close it a few times, but you can't actually take it out to carve a spoon for it. This is a challenge, since to form an accurate opinion, I would first have to commit the money up front. When it comes to the more expensive knives, this is quite the plunge.

So, the impression is all I have to go on for now. Which sucks. I wish I had a friend whose PM2 I could borrow for a day or two.

That said, the way I've been looking at that knife the last year, I'll probably succumb to its' siren call sooner or later. :D

I thought you wanted everyone to forget about all that?

Why are you still bringing it up? Do you like to hear yourself talk?

?What,..... even after the outcome of ''that thread,' you persist!?

I wonder why......

To the original poster of the question: I think, by now, you probably have the answer to your question.

I would suggest to our friend snidelyseriousboob1 to check out the wonderful world of Whine and Cheese......I'm sure his name will be there soon.......deservedly so.

Yes, to my recollection he wanted it all dropped and locked. Yet now is dragging that train wreck into a seperate thread.
Perhaps he is taking the no publicity is bad publicity approach to marketing.

I jumped into Spyderco ownership last Christmas w/the Dragonfly w/Nishijin scales and ZDP-189 steel. I love the size and look of this knife. I picked up two PM2s recently, and aside from opening and closing them a few times, they haven't been used. If you like the look of the knives, make sure that you also like the size of the knives. I'm not saying that the PM2s are too big for me, they are actually smaller than I originally thought, with a nice large, comfortable handle. I just love my DF so much that I can't pocket a PM2.

I think the majority of the Spyderco knives look very nice, some make me shiver though. Not all appeal to me, but that is cool, what would the world be w/no options?

Yep, because of this thread I just ordered a Police and a PM2. Thanks folks for the encouragement. Compared to what you would pay for any other name brand knife the prices are not that bad. And I've never had a Spyderco let me down. Try a Centofante 3 you won't be disappointed.
God Bless
Tracy

On that note, I have a frame lock military on the way as of this morning.

Bought myself a Ti Millie, GP had them for $190, for Christmas and it is amazing!!
