Is it worth the effort?

You are correct, they are yours to do what you want with. Most people don't collect, knives anyway.
 
I hope in another 48 years your son gets just as nostalgic. Looks like it will still be going strong, great job!
 
Congratulations on a job well done on "YOUR" knife! It appears you had the skill set to do an awesome job of restoring it to your specifications. I would be proud to own that knife. You should be too.
