Photos Is less better ?

I agree
Before I went into the hobby of collections folders, I only had a victorinox climber and an Esee 4.

For me these are real tops and I don’t really take them as an hobby
I certainly appreciate the engineering behind SAKs but for some reason I don’t like depending on them as my only cutting tool. I’m weird I guess. I prefer opening stuff with my Cold Steel, Spyderco, or my Mora lol.

Great choice on the Esee 4 dude.

Side question : what is your motivation in your knife collecting hobby ?

Primarily, to always have the pocketable tools I need to deal with life's many situations. General preparedness.

Secondarily, to discover more about myself through observing which knives I sell, which I leave in storage and which I actually carry/use.

A very tertiary motivation is to use them like a piggy bank. Well cared for knives tend to hold their value well and can on occasion function as an investment.

My tastes change, and sometimes they change back. Makes it hard to let some of the hard to find ones go, knowing I won’t see them again anywhere. That’s probably not something I should worry about, but I still do. Once I beat that, the paring down process will get going.

It's probably the guilt that sets in.
Some people have knife collections worth thousands of dollars, tens of thousands even, and they're just sitting there in a case, all that money locked away in a different form. Maybe it's not like that for everyone but guilt is definitely a feeling I had when looking at a bookshelf full of knives, each one being at least $125.00.

My « beaters » including my Esee 4… I had some adventures with it 😅
I think I will get more fixed blades in the future

I really like the mechanical designs of folders. The various locking mechanism and the precision of the machining in folders is really appealing me and that is what has motivated my collection

After experiencing quite a lot of options I ha e come to a point where I know what I really enjoy… hence the reduction of my xollection

However, just like you I think that for real use nothing is better than a fixed blade

I think that in addition to my folders collection I will get 4-5 fixed blades has it is something that is really growing on me

Very nice! That ESEE 4 is honestly a good candidate for a one fixed blade collection.

IMO, I think it helps to have a specific use case for each knife in your collection. If I have knives with no use case or too many knives that have the same use case, then it creates stress and anxiety for me.

FWIW, I am down to 4 knives (including a beater knife, with a broken tip). Any time I want to try something new, a knife leaves my collection after the trial period is over.

I have 8-10 nice folders at any one time. I simply can’t afford to have more money in my “luxury hobby”, so instead I buy used, sell, and trade for what I’d like to try out. And if I don’t use it, it gets sold or traded.

But that doesn’t mean I can’t own a few expensive ones. 😉 So in my case, I keep and use the ones I truly love.

I'm not attempting to derail the thread but can I ask for details on that knife? It's beautiful!

Finnish puukot, French pocket knives, small selection of older Dawsons, a small selection of Bucks (small < 10). Handful of early modern cavalry swords, as well. Mostly users.
What uses do you have for your modern cavalry swords?
Mom, @TheZieg is using his swords again. Can I go over to his house?
