Is liking knives a hobby?

Mtech.... Stick around for a little while and that M tech will find so company very quickly

lol! Yep!
I am using my friends remedy. I have a box with 9 knives in it. One knife MUST go out before another goes in.

I don't know if liking knives in and of itself is a hobby. Collecting knives is a hobby for some. For me, using knives is a hobby. You don't have to buy a bunch of knives to really get a kick out of them. You have one, make some fuzz sticks with it. Carve a spoon.

If you like tools and have a box of tools that you seldom use but you like to have them available if needed, it is a hobby? Most would say no. But if you like wandering around Lowe's, Home Depot, Harbor Freight, Northern Tools etc. looking at all sorts of tools and it gives you pleasure, I'd say that leans heavily toward being a hobby also especially if you occasionally pick up something new to try out.

But since knives are not generally considered necessary outside the kitchen and you LIKE them, I'd call it a hobby. Hobbies tend to grow over time. You don't need to collect knives to call it a hobby interest. Hang around here (BF), you will likely being buying knives.

To answer the Op, yes. A hobby is whatever you want it to be.

Is watching TV a hobby? Do you need a hobby for your resume?

By definition, yes. A hobby can be anything. And maybe I missed it but I don't think he mentioned a resume.

Hi butterboy . collecting information on a subject is as much a hobby as collecting the itam . history is a hobby of mine but it doesn't mean I go out and buy a lot of history :D
PS. Welcome to the forum :)

Depends. Liking hamburgers is not a hobby. Reading about hamburgers, and talking on forums about hamburgers, and having a "wish list" of hamburger places you want to go to, and maybe grinding your own meat, and debating whether 80/20 or 85/15 is better, or if you cringe when that Culver's knucklehead squishes all the juice outta the burger in his commercial...then its a hobby.

But just going to MickeyDees and eating a burger...even if you like it....not a hobby in my opinion.

In the end, its all another one of these weird questions you have been asking that, in the grand scheme, really don't matter.

You got this knife. You like it. What's to get? Enjoy using the damn thing and quit headscratching over it.

Sheesh.

Best picture I've seen in a long time :D:D
Switch that little knife in his hand to a Shirogorov in each hand, and that is me all the way my friend! Just ask my girl, and she'll back up how crazy I am ;)

So iv'e been trying to find a hobby and realized that i really like knives i don't have many in fact i only have 1 cheap mtech folding knife but i'm happy with it and carry it around every where that i can but i don't really have the budget to collect knives and such like other people do. I know collecting knives is a hobby but is liking knives a hobby too? I'm sorry if this question makes no sence to you i tried to explain it the best way that i could lol :)

First off, welcome to the fold! Buckle in, don't step in anything, don't take candy from strangers (unless it's really good candy), and don't touch anything that looks like it will touch you back! :D :D

Firstly, I think this is an argument of samantics, and arguments of samantics are, ultimately, pointless, in the vast majority of cases. We will all think something slightly different, and that is why we will all have slightly different answers, even if we might use the same words to phrase our answers here. It's like arguing philosophy with someone (which I have done at much too high of a level before), in that you will inevitably get to a point where you are debating the very meaning of the words that you are using for hours in order to actually get a point across on either side.
But, I will chime in anyway, because why the hell not ;)

I would say that a hobby is anything that you do to fill your "free time" on a continual basis, and which you either invest time or effort into becoming better at, or possibly just that you enjoy doing repeatedly.
So, I will say that you don't need a huge collection of knives to have them as your hobby. I will also say that just liking them is not necessarily a hobby itself either, but certainly makes it a candidate for a hobby for you.

Now, I will also add this: You came to this forum, made an account, and actively started your own conversation. I would say that you have started to make this a hobby for yourself already, and you will likely continue to do so as you innevitably learn more from reading what all the wonderful people here have to say.
Keep your head cool, your eyes scanning to learn more, and ask the questions that you want to ask, and you will very quickly find that somehow new knives will start to make their way into your pockets, trust me ;)
That is when it truly becomes a hobby based on my interpretation of what a hobby is. Not only that, but it will likely become an obsession for you as well, and you can trust me on that one as well :D

That's how I started to mange my issue as well. Was working so well until out of nowhere there were 10 kives on my shelf instead of the 8 that I know I had put there...............yeah, that was what I told the girl...I don't think she bought it.

If your funds are limited you can learn to sharpen like a Jedi Master, on sandpaper, touch up on ceramic coffee cups. You can look for great deals on used knives. You can lurk, post, and learn here till you know enough to make your possible purchase of another knife a perfect one. You can whittle, the list goes on. (help me out people)

A knife hobby doesn't have to be a knife purchasing hobby.

I think this is the perfect reply. No, just "liking" knives is not a hobby, but there are many ways to act on your appreciation for them without buying a bunch of them.

A hobby needs to be something you engage with in an interactive way. I suppose one could argue that commenting on this forum regularly counts as interactive but in my opinion you've got to go a bit beyond that, at least to sharpening or hunting garage sales and flea markets, etc.

At 12 a got a Buck stockman then a 110. However my gateway was when I started buying my own knives. I bought a windless Kukri in 86 and Spyderco Police Model in 88.
Then it was on.

I'm starting to get into Wooden Ship Model building, that will make my knife hobby more practical as I'll need razor sharp blades, well some Opinels and maybe a Mora will come in handy. using a ZT 560 to form a ship hull wouldn't be practical. I'm starting out with a sail boat, my goal is to recreate the U.S.S Constitution.

It is alot like trading cards.

Here's one that I just sold, next to my best one, next to one that I carry everyday as an edc.

I didn't realize I wanted all of those until I found bf

By definition, it is usually an activity.

And, unless you need a "hobby" to list on a piece of paper, who cares if what you do is a hobby or something else? It's your life, your free time.
