some time this week im going to look at a 300LB anvil i want to buy. i have a ball bearing but its 1.5" in Diamater. is that to big, i dont want to damag the anvil. i saw on anvilfire where thay say to use a 1" ball. am i going to be ok. i have been told that this anvil looks brand new. any tips in checking a used anvil.

Should be fine, just don't THROW the ball at the anvil, drop it from about 1 foot and observe the distance, if it does damage the surface it will be a VERY crappy anvil.

a anvil is supposed to be pretty much everlasting

not much should be able to damage it

im so excyted. this will be my first real anvil. i just dont know where to keep it. i dont think i can pack it up the stairs into my apartment. if i keep it wraped up and under the stairs will it be ok out side.

J, a lot of our big parts that we can't bring inside, but need to take care of it, we apply a coat of Carnuba wax and it works fine for the weather we have here

Keep it inside if possible, MANY people will gladly take anvils to scrap places for the money. or wrap a chain around the waste and LOCK IT, then chain it to something hefty anchored into the ground like staris or a support beam. Other than THEIVES anvils will last about 1,000 years before rusting away hehe, any surface rust you do get will easily come off from some forging, or you can add a coat of grease or thick oil to the anvil if it is stored outside.

its so funny to think about the fealings i get inside when i think about my new anvil. its kinda like the fealing you get when you start dating and you find out a girl likes you.

Sorry, the auto part stores carry it.. we have about 20 to 30 tons of material stacked outside on racks and heat it and spray it on and they are perfect to machine when we bring them in, for your anvil just looks in the car wax section at the auto store, it should come with a pad to apply it,.. to add to Sam's, putting an anchor on it is a good idea, if ya can weld a stout ring at the bottom and just chain it around your stairs.

i have a rubber coated chain and i will lock the chain around the waste and lock the chain to the stairs. are the metal anvil stands any good?

WHich one?! There are very many, the most effective and popular I have seen is the 3 leg stand, or my farrier's stand I find VERY effective, especially with the tool tray, hammer and tong rack and filing vice(the most underestimated tool EVER, that every knifemaker should own). Here is pictures:

easily made with some square tubing, and with the wood inserts easily adjustable to the right height, thanks to JWB ironworks for posting his pictures.

This is the stand I use, other than a stump.

(Also easily made, a bit on the high price to buy, i got mine for a steel $75)

Best stand IMHO is still a stump, but those 3 legged stands are NICE.

the 300 pound anvil comes with a stand for 300 bucks :D. man its like christmass. i just hope its a good anvil.

sam thats a nice stand.

JT, carnuba is car paste wax. Most department stores, grocery stores, and auto stores will have it. If you have time, get out the buffer and make it shine like a new corvette!

Just give it a shot of WD-40. A little rust on an anvil isn't going to hurt it one little bit. A would suggest getting a hand truck (two wheel moving dolly). With an anvil of that size moving it around is something to take serious.

I have left my anvil in the rain and sun for 10 years. after I use it I wipe on some linseed oil over. It comes off quickly when I start wong hot metal. My anvil out side is only 85 kg. It is out of ght behind my fence.I have others all stacjke inside. Linseed oil has many uses and should be in the local hard tore.

I'm not sure how many crackheads there are in Provo but there are theives everywhere. Lock your anvil up since you can't secure it inside.

I've never heard of a "el cheapo" 300# anvil. Sounds like a great score.

Humm,uh, tweekers will steal anything, even if it is chained or bolted down, find a secure place for it where it can't be seen .
We had two tweeks try to steal hot ground wires from power substations here/ crispy critters now.

JT,
Tried a 2" ball on my anvil today. Worked great and rebounded just like the 1". No surface damage at all. Just don't throw it and you'll be ok.
