Hey guys, I was batoning my SpyderCo Delica 4 and it closed. I opened it up and the blade rounded the lock off and now it just closes with a little bit of force. Is it messed up?

Unfortunately yes it's messed up, why would you baton a folding knife that's not designed to take that kind of abuse?
Your pictures don't work.

So you beat on a folding knife with a stick, you can now see the lock has been rounded off and the blade now no longer locks open?

Sounds perfectly normal to me.

What do you think? Were you expecting something different?

Hmmm. I'm sure if you call Spyderco [sarcasm] they'll be more than happy to help you [/sarcasm]

What did you think that little knife was made for???

I would sue Sypderco, Sal, and anyone he has ever spoken to.

It EASILY should have handled that normal use. I regularly baton through bricks at work with mine with no issues.

I'm sure it's not the first time a Spyderco has been abused in the manner. I'm still not sure if the OP is serious or not.

Yes it is messed up. Throw it in the nearest garbage can, then.....

Order yourself a Military... [emoji33]

( If that one breaks you will need to throw it away too. I am pretty sure batoning isn't covered under the warranty [emoji6] )

Hi ShawnKirk, welcome to blade forums, where knife advice and vitriol are readily available to those that ask in an appropriate manner.

ShawnKirk, welcome to Bladeforums. I'm glad Cursum Perficio got it right. The rest of these guys are a disgrace. One or two teasing comments are for fun, but they forgot their manners.

Look around the forums. We have an outdoors section under Community Forums. You can learn how to handle different kinds of knives appropriately. Nothing wrong with batoning that a good fixed blade can't handle. Folding knives need more experience to do it safely.

Perhaps I was a but out of line, but I just find it hard to believe that someone would use a Delica like that. In particular when a knife has a name like that. I know Spydercos are tough - I've had more than my share of them, but you have to think a little when using your knife as to what its intended purpose is. For the kind of use you are attempting, I would look to a fixed blade made for hard use.

Hi ShawnKirk,

Welcome to the Spyderco forum, where we pride ourselves on behaving like adults with patience and understanding. Esav is right and while it is humorous to the knife afi's, it's not helpful for you.

First of all, batoning any folder is a gamble as the impact is tough on the lock. If you have to baton with a folder, unlock the knife and leave the blade loose.

Unfortunately, when the corner of the lock or the tang is "rounded off" and the lock is not holding, it cannot be repaired. Since the steel is harder than the lock, when push comes to shove, the lock will go first. The corner of the tang acts like a chisel under force.

On the plus side, we have all made many mistakes while learning about knives.

Wow ..... didn't realize posting some comic relief in what appears to be an obvious troll thread would cause me to cast off my honor. Much apologies Esav. Thank you for the life guidance.

My post was snarkier than it should have been. For that I apologise.

I don't suggest that others baton a folder. Though like in my pic I have done it. And will continue to do it.

I have also been making kindling by batoning since I was little, long before the internet.

I also understand if I break a folder...the manufacturer will never hear about it. I won't try to use a warranty, it will go in the trash, and I'll buy another one.

Don't feel too bad Shawn, some people suck. But if you take it in stride and maybe dish a little back, you'll survive just fine.
Your knife - not so much.
