Is my Delica 4 messed up?

The pm2 is a great knife and I suspect you will be well pleased. Of course, there are also a few of the hap40 sprint run Delicas still floating around.

Can't go wrong with the PM2 unless you don't like the compression lock. Some people can't get past that lock they like different locks.

Welcome to the forum, as others have said. Your choice of a PM 2 folder would make a great EDC. I've carried both Delicas and PM 2s and to me, one carries as easily as the other. And the PM 2 will give you what I consider to be a better lock and a more useful blade.

As far as the Izula 2 for a FB, if you're going to use it for outdoors / camp chores that might include batoning, I'd recommend a slightly longer blade. An Esee 3 or 4 might work better in that role. I'v done some batoning with small FBs and I prefer at least a 3" blade.

Being mostly confused by this thread, I will just say to the OP "take it slow". I am very surprised (even a bit skeptical) that you know what "batoning" is, but you have no idea how it should be done or why. Using a knife for fire-making is usually unneeded, since it is usually much easier, safer, and smarter to just walk around and find kindling that is already the proper size or thickness.

I have occasionally flown too high, too fast while researching a new topic. Obviously it rarely works out well.
Do not let the negative posts dissuade you from posting. I have much more respect for people like you who can openly share there mistakes than those who pretend to never make them. Banging on folders with sticks is probably a bad idea under most circumstances though. ;)

Fact: Batoning should only be done to show how tough your overbuilt Strider "knife" is. ;) j/k :p

Glad to see Sal and others chimed in with legit responses. It's sad when people assume troll rather than trying to help someone. OP I hope you can figure out a use for the knife and thanks for sharing this for amateurs like me.

Is there anyway to upload a picture to this thread from a phone? I'd like for y'all to take a look at the lock and blade lock up.

When you reply to this thread there should be 4 options at the bottom. Click the camera symbol to upload from your phone.

Under your response there should be an arrow pointing left (reply). Click that. And then your image upload options will appear when you click the camera symbol

I hope that worked.

Yes, the link to facebook worked. Your picture bears out just what Sal said in post #16. The steel of the lockbar is softer than the steel of the blade tang. You can see where the edge of the lock cutout in the blade tang has chiseled out the sharp corner of the lockbar. Essentially, this is a slip joint now. You can use it like that, or, as has already been suggested, tighten the pivot down to where the open blade will not close and use it as a small FB for light duty. I stress using it for light duty and making sure that you don't try to do any hard stabbing with it. Even with a tight pivot, the blade could rotate closed under pressure and you could damage or lose fingers.

You might be able to fix this with a bit of filing in strategic areas, if the lock bar went down a bit more it might lock up tight. If not you can always epoxy the lock into the tang and use it as a fixed blade.

What does everybody else think of this?

OP: I've done a lot of things with knives over the years that I shouldn't have: I've stripped screws being careless, I've snapped tips by prying, I've loosened pivots in order to flick out blades...I've even sunk a hatchet into my knee. You don't always know what the right thing to do is in the moment. The best you can do is learn, which I think makes a mistake an opportunity (not to turn this into too much of a greeting card or anything).

I admire you for posting on here and I hope that this is a mistake, moving forward, that you can learn from. No one starts out as some kind of knife zen master. Everyone makes mistakes. Enjoy the PM2!

why would you batton with a folding knife? No offence but that's not what the knife is made for. Buy a fixed blade with a full tang.

I am stunned by some of the responses. :(

I am sorry to hear about your Delica. I camp and backpack a lot and almost never need to baton and do not understand the knife world's strange fascination with it. I won't do it with a folder. Sometimes the best lessons in life are learned the hard way. Oh well, live and learn.

The Para2 may be the most popular Spyderco currently and for good reason. You won't be disappointed. Everything Esee makes is quality but the Izula is a little small for batoning although it is plenty tough. Becker makes a very similar knife as the Izula which is actually a collaboration between Esse and Becker called the BK14. It has the same handle as he Izula with a slightly larger blade. I have a very well worn bk14 that I love dearly. It has batoned to get dry kindling out of the center of larger pieces of wet wood and worked well. I batoned coconuts open with it on my honeymoon.

My recommendation is to not baton with a folding knife. Grab a $10 or $15 Mora fixed blade if you don't want a big investment.

And welcome, sometimes we can be A-holes, but don't let a few bad apples spoil the bunch.
