Is my Delica 4 messed up?

Tighten down the pivot and retire it to permanent kitchen duty, your new fixed delica

Thanks to everybody who actually helped, the other who wanted to make jokes are no better than what they thought this thread was started for. I used this knife because I had no other knife and wanted to make a fire. And since I've recently watched videos of spyderco folders being batoned with no significant damage I didn't think batoning though a couple pieces of wood wouldnt be a problem. The knife is 5 years old but has been well cared for other than some kinda rough use. The lock however is not completely rounded and the knife still does lock up just not as solid and it just has some up and down play. Thanks anyway for the help... BTW I'm not a troll, just a human learning lessons.

Good to see you're learning something useful here.

The way I see it; be very cautious and wary of any and all knife related YouTube videos! In my opinion a majority of them should be watched with less vested interest than most people here had in your thread. ;)
It's like trying to ask the Internet how to pick up a girl - 99% of the methods shown probably won't actually work, even if it appeared to fly in somebodys homemade YouTube video. :p

Hopefully the responses you got don't turn you off of the forum completely. Glad your delica is still usable, a lot of lessons are learned at a higher price. You will find that the knife world is full of experts. Many of them hang out here, youtube, and a host of other forums. Like all experts, its worth keeping track of who's got skin in the game.

I think it's great the thread has turned out so well. You're off to a good start. Spyderco makes first class knives, or they wouldn't dominate my collection the way they do!9

Okay okay ill admit a was pretty harsh just now as i was absolutely flabbergasted. My apologies. But why didn't you have a fixed blade or a heavy duty folder with you?

The cutting edge on the Delica is only about 2.5" so you couldn't be batoning anything over say 2" in diameter. In the future I'd recommend just burning something that size.

Just a hint Glenn, but if you ever feel the need to add "no offense" to anything you say, its probably a thing you shouldn't say.

Not everyone carries a pile of steel with them all the time. At least we know the guy has good taste in EDC knives. So he got some bad advice, and now he knows better. Flabbergasted or not, insulting people just isn't on. I'll give the benefit of the doubt given your join date and post count, and the way the thread started. Lets try to be gentlemen yes?

Well i have admitted my mistake and given my apologies that i should not have been so harsh. So sorry again.. But i just cant get around the thought of battoning a thin and lightweight little knife that has a traditional lock back

But then again, ive had a friend who is completely inexperienced throwing a boker magnum knife that i had bought for him as an inexpensive gift multiple times until it fell apart on him. But he was inexperienced so what can i say. Perhaps i should be more undertsanding. Apologies

Esav, any time you want to balance your collection out I am happy to send you my address for those excess pesky Spydies :D

OP it sounds like an expensive lesson well learned but you aren't the only person here to do something a bit dumb with a knife, nor will you be the last. It may be worthwhile picking up an inexpensive carbon steel fixed blade to practice batoning. If you want to practice with a folder, try with a friction folder first because there isn't a lock to break.

Welcome to the forums. Stick around and learn heaps :)

I'm glad to see positive active moderators in this forum and a couple of quick knowledgable responses. Trashing the new guys won't win many friends or acrue many paid memberships for the forum owners.

Damn. Some of you guys are rough. If I hadn't already been established on this board, this thread probably would have been enough to say screw-it and leave, to never return.

Some of you fail to realize that we were all beginners at some point in time. We have all started a thread which was as crazy as this one, if not worse.

Give the guy a break. Criticize if you want, but all be respectful about it. By the way, if your going to spend the time to bust balls, at least be helpful along the way.

Don't ever think you're above anyone, just because you've been doing this for awhile and have spent thousands on knives.

Happy New Year......

To the OP, the Spyderco sub-forum is generally one of the best ones to hang out in. I think some people thought you were a troll and responded as such. Hang around long enough and you'll realize Sal (owner of Spyderco) is very active and asks participants here to be respectful and it generally works.

To your subject, just unlock any folder you want to baton with and you should be good. Spyderco does make some sweet fixed blades too. I'd recommend a look at the Serrata for a camp knife that might see some batonning.

Sorry OP. Thought you were a troll. There are a lot of them. I hope you get some more Spyderco knives. They are great. Hope we didn't scare you off of them or this forum with our smartass comments.

OP- Use the right tool for the job, please. Your Spyderco knife will become your best friend and it should be used, not abused.

I actually have another spyderco. A little ladybug serrated edge. It don't see as much use as the delica though. The delica still is usable just like I said it doesn't lock up as strong. But still locks none the less. I now have learned the techniques to use when using a folder if I have to it that way. I don't have many fixed blades cause I don't really have any way of really caring a big knife. But the delica will just see easy use the rest of its days. I'm looking to get a pramailitary 2 to replace the spot of the delica. And also I've been looking at a see izula fixes blade for tines like these. Any comment on these two knifes?
