Is "one stroke - change side - one stroke" - ok when sharpening?

I used the Sharpmaker like this for a long time, and did it this way on an Arkansas stone before that. I did one pass on each side just as the instructions say. It works fine. If you only have one stone, it takes longer. You spend as much time changing direction as you do sharpening.
