Is the BM710 still the iconic knife it once was?

When I got into knife collecting, I started asking around about what nice knife I should get. The answer came back: Benchmade 710, more than half the time. So I picked one up and haven't even thought about selling it (I've off almost every other "iconic" knife I've owned).

The very long, perfectly recruved blade with the perfect balance of thickness to primary grind angle. That perfectly adjusted silky axis lock (best Axis from Benchmade so far IMO). Rounded G-10 handles and lightened steel liners all in a package that pockets very well... It's a nice knife to say the least!

Is the 710 the go-to knife like it was 7 or 8 years ago? Does yours sit at a different level in your collection?

I've modified mine a bit, but still carry it regularly:

my 710 d2 & 710 m390 are in my regular rotation. this model i.m.o. is an american legend. may i mention that the heattreat of d2 by b.m. certainly puts that model in the upper tiers of edge holding workers. of course the m390 is so great that it sets in a class by itself. i have never cleaned these knives with any special attention, although my preference is a flipper mechanism i can state the axis has never stuttered.--dennis

Yes, it remains iconic, almost a must-have, IMO. The new M390 versions have really put some new vigor in the 710, too, even though so far they have been LE knives. The fact that this knife is still on the market a dozen years after it was introduced is a very strong testament to how well McH & W got the design back in 1999.

I have a couple 710's and I love'em! Mine are carried quite regularly!

Yes it is IMO. I've stopped EDCing it for about a year now in favor of an XM-18 which seems to want all of my pocket time. I haven't even carried my new S35VN Sebenza because I can't pick up another folder beside the XM.

I do EDC a 2nd knife and that's a Spyderco Military cuz it's so light, fast and wicked sharp. I do flick my 710 every couple of nights with some others so they don't feel neglected. :D

still in my rotation as well, damn great blade!!! Icon of blades 4sure........

I'm a little embarrassed in admitting this since I've been collecting knives for quite a few years, but I've never owned a 710. :o However, I have handled a 710 and really love that recurve blade and the axis lock of course.....it is definitely on my 'must get' list....

Might have to buy my first 710 tomorrow... looks like a big sucker, but a must have.

The 710 still rocks.

Where did you get the barrel style backspacers that you put in, I like them?

IMO, the 710 is an elegant knife and if you were lucky enough to score one of the M390 versions, you will find it the 'lightsaber' of the knife world.

In all seriousness, the 710 is like the Military and a few other knives: every serious knife user/collector should at least give it a serious trial. Lots of knives come and go. Knives that are still going strong a dozen years after they were introduced are doing something right for a large number of people.

Edit to echo the vote for M390. I think the dealer who commissioned the LE still has some of the DLC knives for sale (and ships internationally).
