Is the box important when selling used knives?

Does it matter if the used knife you buy comes with or without the original box?

Depends on your buyer, of course. So far you've heard mainly from collectors, they want the box and box accessories.

For me, my rule of thumb is if I think I may pass a knife on, I keep the box around because other people seem to value it and it isn't a big deal to store it. If I know I'm keeping it, I don't care.

A lot of people seem to want the boxes, but I personally dont care. I do keep the boxes around since theyre easy to store and if I ever sell my knives I know the people will want the box. I think it is a little bit silly, but I am more a user than collector.

I like having the original box and any additional material (papers, baggy, etc.) when buying a used knife. Is it a deal breaker if it doesn't have the box? Nope. I just prefer having it.

Like many folks, the number of knives I own tend to shrink and swell over time, so if I sell one, I like being able to offer up the box for the next person. Storing them isn't a big deal to me.

If you think you're going to sell a knife, you'll get a better price if you have the box. As a buyer, I only really care about the condition of the knife. I'd rather have a bare knife in excellent condition than a beater with a box.

I keep all my boxes in the attic so they are out of my way but accessible if I sell a knife. The importance of having the box if you sell goes up with the cost of the knife in my experience.

Depends on the buyer, but if the knife is slightly used (no mark or scratch) then with the box it might be nothing different than new. I usually throw the knife box away after some use if its not defective. Otherwise I need a room to put all those box.

Absolutely. The better the knife the more important the box. Like if it’s gonna be a safe queen anyway it should have the box.

Collectors generally want EVERYTHING that came with the knife ,as pristine as possible .

They will pay more and some may not even bid on anything less .

Less collectable , banged up beaters , amateur mods , cheap and very common models that people buy to use may not matter about the box .

Box and papers can help prove the knife is genuine , also .

I want the original packaging and will pay 10-20% more depending on the item for in tact material.

edited to add - my desire to have, and willingness to pay for, original materials, depends greatly on price point of the item. A cheap sub 50$ knife I am unlikely to buy used and really wouldn’t care about materials if I did. A mid range 200ish dollar knife I’d want and would pay extra for the materials. A higher end knife getting closer to 1000$ and up I would expect the packaging materials and almost wouldn’t buy something without it.
