Is the Case Jumbo Stockman and Large Stockman the same?

I have read in different places about a jumbo stockman and I see Case has a large Stockman, I have also read the large in 4.25 inches closed, but someone on youtube said a large Case stockman is more like 3.9 inches closed, so who knows the deal?

Jumbo at the top (6375) 4.25" closed, large below and left (6347) 3.9" closed, next two are mediums with square and round bolsters, bottom is small.

man the sheepsfoot on that jumbo stockman kinda makes the buck 301's sheepsfoot feel a bit...inadequate doesnt it?

hrm, full flat grind, carbon steel AND amber bone scales...its the best of all worlds
*looking for a jealous smiley* :o thats the best i could come up with :p

Whoa, I hadn't noticed that specific blade until you mentioned it; I was more globally impressed by the whole honkin' knife's size. That's some sheepsfoot.

hrmm those smiley's dont show up when you do a quick reply
i presume they are in the "reply to thread" options

but thanks for the assist :D

and to make a knife related point
i do believe i like the big clip point blades much better than the slim clip (california clip? turkish clip points)
just look alot sturdier and more aesthetically pleasing to me :D

Yeah, I've always preferred the standard clip to the Turkish clip, probably why I've never warmed to the muskrat. And yes, that 6375 is a big honker. The sheepsfoot is going to work for a long, long time.

The grinds on the '75 pattern stockman blades (clip, spey and sheepfoot) are actually full-height hollow grinds, not flat. This means they're great slicers, for the very same reason (very thin profile). Also very easy to sharpen.

Same holds true for current versions of the '47, '18, '44 stockman patterns.

Jack, the way you have them listed is the way I've always known them, but the Case College on their website lists the 47 pattern as a medium stockman, and the 75 as a large. No wonder there is some confusion.

Some vendors add to the confusion by listing the '47 as a 'large' stockman as well. When seeing 'Jumbo' in the thread title, I immediately thought of an older case pattern (not in current line) that actually was referred to as 'jumbo'. It was the '40 pattern (5340/6340). Lengthwise, about the same as the '75 pattern, maybe slightly longer (4-3/8" closed). But much 'fatter'; sort of looked like a bigger sowbelly (serpentine w/round bolsters), and was last seen in the 'Case Classic' line back in the '90s.

Well I got fooled by the listing. I ended up with an amber bone 6375 and it's huge. I prefer something the size of a Buck 303, and the 6375 feels twice the size (an exaggeration, I know).

Not surprising, considering what they call the small Texas Jack is bigger than what they just call the Texas Jack. That's why I try to call them by number whenever I can.

Is the 6375 a 3 spring knife?

I think I would have to try one some time down the road if so.

Thanks.

ETA, I found in another thread that it is 2 spring. That is great to hear in a way. How much crinking is going on with these knives? Can you lay the edge of a sheepsfoot flat on a stone to sharpen? I really like the amber bone cv but I don't want frustration when sharpening.

That happened to me too, the 6375 was my first traditional pattern and it's too big for my pocket.
Case stockmen are complicated, after a while this is how I catalog them
- small: 63087; 6333; 6344
- medium: 6318; 63032; 6347
- large: 6392; 6375

I think there are another stockman patterns but with this I'm ok.

See you

I certainly don't have any trouble sharpening, but I'm used to crinked blades. I'll try to get some pictures later today so you can judge for yourself.

I love that 6375 Stockman! While it is a BIG pocket knife, for me it carries very well in my front jeans pocket. I have a similar sized Buck 307 and it feels kind of chunky and tends to slip down sideways in my pocket. I'm sure the rougher texture of the bone grips on the Case keep in in place. We'll see in 20-30 years after they have smoothed out and change my opinion. That knife is built to last. If I had to only keep one (groan...) I think that would be the one!

Yab,

Thanks for the info, My favorite online dealer says the large are 4.25 closed so I checked Case's website and they have large Stockmans at 4.25 inches closed, I wonder if they decided to just have large stockmans at 4.25 and get rid of the jumbo! I am really confused on this one.

Case Large Stockman
Pattern 6375 CV
Clip, Spey and Sheepfoot Blades
4 1/4 in. closed
4.1 oz.

I just copied this from an online dealer, Case's website says the same, so I think at some point Case turned the Jumbo into the Large Stockman, I am just trying to clear up the confusion on this.

Case calls them both large stockmans. Dumb I know but other dealers call the 47 pattern
Mediums and others just called it the stockman. I have both patterns but I like the 75 pattern 4 1/4 the best. It's a handful but I'd rather carry it rather than a trapper.

Thanks, now I know I am not crazy. I really like the 6375 CV and plan getting one soon along with a 3375 CV Yeller handle.

Now way back when case made bigger stockmans than the 75 pattern. They made one that was 4 1/2 inches closed and it was called the jumbo stockman. The 75 pattern has changed over the years too. I think it was a different size give or take but it had long pulls and swedes. They started making it look like the modern ones like your ordering bout late 60's early 70's. The only difference is the ones from the seventies was better quality but the shields was right in the middle of the handles and the new ones are toward the right. Classic knife pattern
That a lot of people use. The crinked sharps foot blade isn't a problem to sharpen either.
