Is the Domino a working knife?

I was going to add that the SB caly 3 is still available at BBS...if you can stomach it.

Cheers,
Adam

Now you tell me :D. No way I can do 2 new knives in one weekend.

I will really need to bond with the Domino before I can introduce yet another. No looking back.

But now I have a bookmark for BBS. They are new to me. I can see I missed a lot not looking there. Oh well...

If you want a good working blade in XHP take a look at The Knife Center Native. You can buy two and still have change for lunch at mickey d's for what the Domino will run you.

I know decision has been made, but out of criteria listed, this would've been my pick.

I wanted a blue domino so bad but I was impatient and snagged a regular one of the exchange at first chance. Had it about 2 weeks now...absolutely love it. I dont think you will find the flipper redundant when you feel how smooth it flips, although i do still use the hole, both are convenient. You will love it. And you better post pics of it after some job site wear. I bought a lot of new oils and grease after mine came in. Found the mil-comm extreme performance synthetic grease works amazing another would be the milcomm mc2500 synthetic gun oil (big NRA endorsement on bottle) Hope you enjoy the blade, I think you will be very pleased.

Stretch, Native, Caly, whatever--IMO, go with anything but the Domino. It's oddly shaped, and not in a good way, and it takes up a ton of space in your pocket as well.

That said, if you need a spatula or spackle knife on occasion, the small-edged but enormously wide blade of the Domino would be superior to one of their more normally shaped knives.

Don't forget its made in Taiwan! Piece of junk...

I have no issues with knives made in Taiwan, or with Spyderco knives in general; I just think the Domino is a terrible design (and yes, I own one). Is that an invalid opinion to share for some reason?

I carry one of these made in Taiwan Spyderco knives most days, FWIW:

Pretty sure he was being sarcastic...

..i hope.

I'm all for USA made stuff as well but the stuff that comes out of the Taichung factory is top notch.

I hope for his sake he was being sarcastic. If not he is missing out on some of the best knives for the money. I've gotten to the point that I am disappointed when a new spyderco I like is made in Japan or USA.

Yes sarcasm, I'm usually one of the proponents for the Taiwan made spyderco's, IME they have some of the best F&F in the production knife world. Usually someone comes in (I won't name names but usually one of the same few people) and says something along the lines of that or "well it's not US made" and somehow those few people missed this thread so I figured I'd do it for them.

To reiterate, a Taiwan spyderco (GB) is my second favorite knife (second only to my sebbi), I have zero problem with foreign made knives, I judge only on the merit of the knife its self...

Tho I don't yet own one I did get to carry a southard for a few weeks and it was also a superb knife, my two favorite spyderco's.

ETA: my comment was not in any way directed at evilgreg, he's NOT one of the few people I was talking about, none of those people have yet to post in this thread, Greg sorry if you felt I was attacking you, again it was just sarcasm and not at all my true opinion.

I have 12 Spydies and if I could only keep one, it would be the Domino.
Great little design, fits my hand very comfortably, and after some use, I am finding it to be quite the worker.
I posted a thread when I got mine last year, raving about it. Even now, I still get a little rush when I open her up.
Glad I got this one.
Cheers

Domino arrived today and I'm friggin' lovin' it. My other Spydie family members have warmed up to it very well....:D

Well here I am to report that after all the above - your enthusiasm and some dissent - I received the Domino today AND - I'm sending it back

I was at first underwhelmed. Amazed at how BIG it seemed compared to my Endura. It is a big fat little thing that wouldn't carry every day very well at all - so here I agree with evilgreg.

Fits my hand exceptionally well when open with the 2 position grip - choked up finger in the choil is very comfortable - so here I agree with Noddy13

Thought that the lightning strike blue is garish - not subtle at all. Started thinking hard about making a wooden scale to replace.

I am not a collector (as yet) only want a good knife that I can carry and use every day comfortably and effectively. Sharp I can do and I expect the new Spyderco to come out of the box sharp. The Domino does not disappoint. It is not such an improvement over the Endura though to justify keeping it.

The Domino opens slicker than a bean. It is a wonderful piece of precise engineering. It's just too big for my EDC.

I am looking for a 3" (+/- maybe an 1/8") and sized overall proportionately that I can carry without thinking, work with without hesitating and is not to all precious that I just want to keep it on a velvet lined shelf. The Endura was close but was often too long.

I have to see what I can swap out with the seller. I don't want him to lose a sale because I am finicky. I'll keep looking.

Next thing I have to do is change out my Avatar :). I was too optimistic. Oh well…

Thanks you all for your contributions to this discussion. I hope you folks with the Dominos don't take offense to my new perspective. The world keeps a turnin'.

I know you want something a little different, but the Delica fits everything you're looking for. I also find the Endura a little too long..would be better at 3.4-3.5"..so it's relegated to kitchen duty. Plus the Delica currently has 3 steel choices to choose from.

If you don't absolutely love the Domino, be careful--I've noticed that every time I mention my dislike of the Domino's design (despite the fact that I love Spyderco, and own a pile of their products) the villagers here start grabbing for their torches and pitchforks ;)

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't make a love connection with this one, but this is one area where Spyderco truly shines, IMO--they produce so many different styles of knives, work with so many outside designers, use so many different locks and materials, etc. that they have something for everyone. I'm sure there is the perfect Spydie for you out there, if you look for it.

 Why bring a pitchfork to a knife fight, though a good floddy LED torch is always in order? :D - Well I truly hope that my disappointment doesn't translate to disappointment (or worse) from you all to me. If I could have held one in my hand before buying, all this discussion could have been avoided - but what would we have learned?

Anyway-I write now to beat the dead horse - er, to report on my next Spyderco choice - DRUM ROLL PLEASE -

The Spyderco Sage 2 C123TIP Folding Knife, 3" Plain Edge Blade, Titanium - A not so new classic Spyderco.

I never even saw this one on the website from where I bought the Domino (National Knives) but yesterday I found it on a page out of sequence and alphabetical order. It seems to be a very good choice considering my criteria - a bit smaller, simple clean lines, good durability for the scales and light weight as an EDC (and less expensive too). Honestly, had I seen this model I might have chosen it before the Domino. Yes, there are still many other choices but I did want to keep this purchase cycle all with one vendor and the Sage 2 was a good one he had left.

I'll keep it to myself if I'm still unhappy , but I'm pretty certain that this will be perfect.

Again, I thank you all for joining in the talk. It's been interesting.

Nah, let us know, we're curious. I'm carrying my Sage 2 today and it is a great EDC. This knife used to get a lot of attention before Spyderco starting making other knives that get more attention.
