Is the Domino a working knife?

 Why bring a pitchfork to a knife fight, though a good floddy LED torch is always in order? :D - Well I truly hope that my disappointment doesn't translate to disappointment (or worse) from you all to me. If I could have held one in my hand before buying, all this discussion could have been avoided - but what would we have learned?

Anyway-I write now to beat the dead horse - er, to report on my next Spyderco choice - DRUM ROLL PLEASE -

The Spyderco Sage 2 C123TIP Folding Knife, 3" Plain Edge Blade, Titanium - A not so new classic Spyderco.

I never even saw this one on the website from where I bought the Domino (National Knives) but yesterday I found it on a page out of sequence and alphabetical order. It seems to be a very good choice considering my criteria - a bit smaller, simple clean lines, good durability for the scales and light weight as an EDC (and less expensive too). Honestly, had I seen this model I might have chosen it before the Domino. Yes, there are still many other choices but I did want to keep this purchase cycle all with one vendor and the Sage 2 was a good one he had left.

I'll keep it to myself if I'm still unhappy , but I'm pretty certain that this will be perfect.

Again, I thank you all for joining in the talk. It's been interesting.

Great choice. Good steel, feels great in hand, great f/f. As long as you're not someone who freaks out about wear marks on their handles, you'll very much enjoy it. I don't own one anymore, but it felt best in my hand with a finger in the choil...great for detail work, and one thing you can't do with a Delica.

While I am quite fond of my Sage 2 as well, it too is kinda a big fat little thing as far as how it carries in the pocket. It opens and closes sooo smooth and crisply, though.

The Sage 2 will have a smaller "feel" to it. The clip is my personal favorite. It is a no nonsense simple knife. The only things I can find fault is for me it is a bit small, but your taste are leaning towards a smaller knife so that is good. Also, I am not a fan of S30V. I don't hate it, but have a lot of it and am not too impressed with it and bored with it. That being said, I have a Sage 3, 2, 1 and got them in that order so the steel does not keep me from buying. Someone mentioned the Gayle Bradley. I love the Gayle Bradley, but would not recommend it to you.

This is the Gayle Bradley, Sage 1, Caly 3 ZDP-189, & Chaparral (you can get XHP now in this little guy, and I like that better than S30V).

Swhat I spect. I hope I come to the same conclusion. The gimping in the finger choil and the no-nonsense titanium scale are big added features for me. I expect the titanium will take on a great patina as it's used. That will just make it better.

Gotta laugh though, looking at it next to the Domino in trevitrace's photo shows it to be just slightly less of a fatty than the Domino. It is shorter and doesn't have the flipper so I willlll like this knife :D.

If you don't absolutely love the Domino, be careful--I've noticed that every time I mention my dislike of the Domino's design (despite the fact that I love Spyderco, and own a pile of their products) the villagers here start grabbing for their torches and pitchforks ;)

I'm sorry to hear that you didn't make a love connection with this one, but this is one area where Spyderco truly shines, IMO--they produce so many different styles of knives, work with so many outside designers, use so many different locks and materials, etc. that they have something for everyone. I'm sure there is the perfect Spydie for you out there, if you look for it.
You post the same thing in every Domino thread.

You post the same thing in every Domino thread.

If I browsed your post history do you suppose I might find positive comments about the Domino in a dozen different threads? People on knife forums tend to post about knives they own, whether they have positive or negative impressions of them. It sort of works that way. I see you also regularly post positive things about the Gayle Bradley as well--we agree on that one, incidentally.

I have a Domino and I think it's a clunker so I mention that frequently when I discuss it, despite my general love of Spyderco as a company in general. Here's a picture of mine with a more normally shaped knife with similar blade length:

You like it, I don't. Opinions work that way or something.

Caly 3 has the narrowest profile of what you're looking for with a 3" blade. I have it in CF & ZDP-189 laminate and the gorgeous CF & Damascus. Of course, there's also the G-10 & Super Blue which I don't have. Good thickness to the blade at 0.125".

Now, if you like CTS-XHP and don't mind a 2.8" blade get a Chaparral 1 CF for about $100! However, know that the blade is pretty thin at 0.08".

Lastly, the Sage series with 3" blade of S30V that's 0.125" thick. Great choice of handle material and locking mechanism. A tad on the wide side but nothing like the Domino as you can see in post #42.

I love the Caly, and RamZar's CF and damascus version is gorgeous if you can find one.

The Caly 3 in the super blue was my 1st choice but the one I asked about was no longer available. I looked around but couldn't find one and then later learned about another source. Too late as I had already purchased the Domino and then when it came to return the Domino I decided it was best to stay with the original vendor if possible. The Titanium Sage 2 made that possible. I think I have chosen well after all but will know for sure next week.

As for the ongoing discussion about evilgreg singing the same old song every time the subject of the Domino comes up I say - thank you for the counter point. The variety of points of view is exactly what I hoped for. As you now all know - on paper I loved the idea of the Domino but once in my hand I fell over into the evilgreg camp. No reflection on anyone else - it just didn't suit me well enough to be my EDC, notwithstanding it's evident quality construction and operation. It just didn't fit. I was glad for all the view points and now evilgreg won't be alone in these discussions. :D

Good choice on the Sage 2. A smooth titanium frame lock.

I'm also in the Fats Domino camp like EvilGreg. :D

No offense to Fats Domino the man, Spyderco or fans of the Spyderco Domino.

Cant go wrong with the Domino if you ask me. Love mine so far. Don't know that I am ready to thump on it yet. I will carry, but heavy use is going to be hard. I really like this one.

Glad you found the Sage2. I was considering one when I wanted a Ti Framelock - but then I won a Domino, which put that to rest.
For 3" blade I was going to recommend the Sage1. But It's still not as slender as the Delica and Endura.

As for the Domino, it's a little chunky but no worse than a Manix2. To me, as long as it isn't obnoxiously heavy (ZT550) ergos are more important than dissolving into my pocket. To that end, if I wasn't already in love with my PM2 I'd have no problem carrying the Domino every day. On rare occasions when I really want something smaller/lighter the Sage1 is always available.

Good luck, and let us know how you like it.

There is no need to spam every Domino thread if you don't like it. Some people go around spamming every single thread with their opinion as if it were a crusade.

It would be easier to follow your rules for forum participation if I had them all. I just went through your post history again and noticed that in the past couple of weeks you've "spammed" a lot of ZT threads with negative comments about ZT. That is, if posting similar negative statements more than once in the space of a couple of weeks counts as spam. I see that you do always say positive things about the Domino, though.

So far I've got:

1. Only say positive things about the Domino
2. Only say negative things about ZT

What are the rest of your imperial proclamations? I'd hate to fall back on just providing my opinion about knives that I own in a free and open discussion of knife-related stuff, that would be terrible ;)

Sage 2. Man, what a wonderful knife. Just talked my buddy into getting one and he is in love. Very high quality blade at that price point. More for your money and better ergos than the domino IMHO.

DUDE - I was joking. Lighten up.

Besides which - As the OP of this thread I say it has run its course. Been interesting and I thank you all for your encouragement, advice and support - no matter how I chose. I'll get back to you on the updates.

Have fun with your Spydercos - no unnecessary blood letting - literally or figuratively.

Just received mine today and I am loving it. It's a perfect medium size knife - looks awesome - works beautifully and without effort, and of course it came pretty D sharp. I'll take some of the edge off tomorrow in the work trials.:D

I'm very happy I traded the Domino off the lot for the Sage II. For me, it was a good choice.
