Is the hype genuine?

Hey guys, for awhile now I've seen thread after thread and hundreds of posts about Hinderer knives, from xm18s to xm24s and I'm curious as to whether or not everyone's excitement about them is really genuine? From what I've seen the construction consists of the same materials as a Zero Tolerance or high-end Spyderco but at a sub $400 price tag, I know maybe the fit and finish may be a step higher, and attention to detail, heck maybe even the steel is a bit higher end, but is it really worth it?

I'm definatly not trying to bash Hinderer knives, not atall, just genuinely curious about what makes these knives so great, I do find myself attracted to his "spanto" blade shape, but for me the rest of the design doesn't catch my attention, what makes his knives so desirous? Personal preference? If so I do understand that, and I will drop the subject right here, without further argument.

Thanks,

Zach

In my opinion my 3.5" XM-18 is worth every penny of the $385 I paid for it.

However (also only my opinion), it is not worth the ~$700 they sell for on the secondary market.

IMO, YMMV, etc.

That said, I do intend to purchase a 3" and XM-24 if I can.

Your in for it dude.............

Think so? I'll blank it out and apologize if it does I knew it was a gamble when the question popped into my mind.

Any mods see this get out of hand please blank it out, I'm not here to cause trouble.

Standard question, no problem about asking. Would you rather I leave it here for the general membership to answer, or move it to the Hinderer forum?

If you can buy one from Hinderer for about $400, then fine. I am not a cop or EMT or military, so I paid $650 and $725 for the two that I had. I sold both of them about two weeks after I bought them here on the Exchange. They are good knives, but MUCH more heavy-duty than I have any need for...and of course they weigh more than my Sebenza or PM2's.

Imo you aren't asking anything that should result in people with upset feelings.

It would be really silly if somebody took offense to the question, but then there are those with tissue thin skin so who knows?

The best materials, the best craftsmanship, the most original designs. Worth every penny Rick charges for them.

You nailed it!

Won't pay $8-900 bucks for a Hinderer but I will drop $200. On a 0561. Almost as good if you ask me. Just my .02

I will be honest, I handled a Hinderer once and was gloriously unimpressed. Sure, it was well made, but for costing as much as it does, you really have to LOVE it to want it. Same as with a Sebbie or any of the super high end folders, you pay for the tolerances. There are other knives at 1/10th the price that will be as durable, or knives 1/2 or less with the same or better materials. Same as a Ferrari vs a Corvette- both drive, both are far faster than ever needed, but only one carries the luxury title. Is that title worth it? Sure if you want it and have the money.

Personally, I would say that all of the custom and semi custom knives are more hype than function, and more bling than tools. My opinion is not popular, but having zilch in the financial department keeps your views pretty heavily rooted. When you can afford better you gravitate towards it, but that doesn't mean it is worth it (but of course worth is subjective).

I trust that the people that pay $600+ for a knife feel that it is worth it to them. Similarly I pay $100+ for a used Benchmade or near $200 for a Spyderco Sprint and I think it is worth it to me. It is up to the buyer to determine what things are worth to them. It would be hard for a person to justify why their $100 or $200 or $500 knife is worth more than something like a $30 Ontario Rat 1 or a $35 Spyderco Tenacious. I think those knives at their price points define the baseline for knife quality. Those knives are good knives at a good price, and represent good value. Knives for less money might turn out to be too cheaply made. Knives for more money are surely better knives in some way, but the quality per dollar might not be as good.

I finally got a ZT 0561 through a trade, with approximately $225 invested in it due to the value of my trade. I like the knife and I think it is a good knife, but it would be hard for me to justify the price to someone that wasn't a knife enthusiast. Of course the same could be said of a $100k Porsche to a person driving a utility vehicle.

I need to get in touch with one of my buddies who qualify for direct pricing. I keep putting it off, but I gotta do it. I'm sure their worth it, but I'm not gonna pay 7 to $900 for them especially knowing that the msrp is under $400.

People who qualify are the ones who get to enjoy it most and are the ones who are making money out of them. New customers get priority but I'm sure there are those who have gotten quite a few XM's and flipped them being able to get them direct. Wished everyone received the same treatment as I would probably have a few already.

You seem to be missing the point of Rick's program.

I don't care. I'll pay 400 bucks for it. That's all it boils down to, I'm not trying to catch the point. Weather I know it or not (which I do) doesn't matter more than the bottom line.

It may be an honorable thing for him to do, and getting one that way is a slight to that... But I'd do it anyway.

Nice knives but pricing is a can of worms. Not enough bang for the buck for me, esp since I don't care for heavy folders that much.

Classy.

...And who are you to judge? Seriously, what merit do you have to criticize? Hey man, you yourself said you wouldn't pay more than $400 for it. I actually would, but couldn't afford to spend that much. I just further elaborated my situation on how I could actually get one. It is meant so that people who serve can get a tool fast and at msrp. It's not a perfect world, the program is meant well but it does have its shortcomings. For one,it just isn't fair. In the end I want one for $400 just like you did and am considering having someone get it for me at that price. I'd rather do that than get one for 7 to $900, half of which I don't know whose pocket it goes to. My money is hard earned, I want 100% of the price I pay to go to Rick. I'll just keep my ideas regarding the subject to myself moving forward. I shouldn't even have to explain myself. Being called "classy" is enough for me.
