Is the hype genuine?

Get a Les George VECP.
Use it for 6 months, then ask your question again.

Just sold a VECP 2.0 at an inflated secondary market price. Just $150 less than what I paid for my XM-18. Awesome knife, the VECP, not hyped. Just slightly less awesome than my XM because I can't have fun changing scales, standoffs, etc.

Amen brother!! Personally, IMO, you cant beat CRK.

Pretty much, I own 2 ZAAN's, one still in box and the other I carry....

I own more than a few expensive knives as some here know, but I find that I tend to carry my Spyderco Military's more than anything else.

I just wish CRK would kick up their hardness a couple of points though.

My ZAAN's are late S30V, like the last batch made, had one of the blades tested and it's 59.5 RC.

Don't know what they are doing with S35VN though...

I don't know what my Zaan is at exactly, but it does lose its edge faster than any of my other blades except my CRKT AUS8.

I wasn't planning to reply again, but I see where it's going :) don't get me wrong I definatly don't doubt the quality of Rick's knives, not at all, I doubted the price for what I was getting, whether it was worth my money to buy if it was not going to be superior to many other knives in the same category, albeigh production quality, from what I've seen everybody is crazy about them, but I just could not see why, I thought I was missing some big secret ;) Since I've discovered that I am indeed not missing anything and it just isn't my style for the price, I will not be buying one, not because of Rick's policies, or the quality of his products.

Thanks :D just wanted to clear that up, thanks for all the suggestions a CRK is my top choice for that price point atm.

Just remember that there's not really a perfect knife, everything is a compromise to some degree. I have a few Benchmades, Kershaws, ZTs, a couple of CRKs, and a Hinderer, and I can find a lot of things I like about all of them, and a few things I'd change (again, on all of them). As long as the pros outweigh the cons to you personally, that's all that matters :)

Thanks definatly agree there

I think the bottom falling out of the secondary Hinderer market is just a hope. They have been out for several years now and are not much easier to get ahold of and the number of people wanting them is increasing daily. To my knowledge Mr. Hinderer has showed no interstate in becoming another run of the mill production company. If Spyderco can't pump out enough paras to meet demand what makes you think Hinderer is gonna be spamming XMs anytime soon? The people that own them won't be trying to justify why they over paid if it ever does happen they paid what they did cause it was worth to them and they could afford too.

I realized that I don't need to reply to this post so I edited it. Yeah, I'm not trying to make anyone feel bad about buying what they like, so continue on people.

Any knife going into the $150+ range starts getting more about the jewelry factor than the cutting tool factor. powernoodle put it well, these knives won't do anything quantifiably better than a $50 knife from a good manufacturer. But if it puts a smile on your face and you can afford it, then it must be worth it to you.

A Hinderer will cost me more than my first two cars combined. And both those cars had engines and transmissions with fine enough tolerances to last over 300,000 miles with no rebuild... Put that way, it doesn't sound worth it. Then again, the watch I'm wearing and the spyderco in my pocket combined cost about the same as the hinderer... So, priorities, values, and what brings you joy change.

I personally don't care for his knives, I would probably carry one if it was given to me though. actually, there's no way it could kick the Military out of my pocket. My military with it's Ti framelock, g10 scale, and blade steel that puts Hinderer's to shame. As well as, IMO, superior ergonomics and design.

but for others that tiny amount of better fit and finish, combined with the name and design are enough to kick the better performing Military out for the Hinderer. And that's cool too. It would be a boring world if we all had the same tastes.
