Is the Manix a "must have" knife?

Another newby question:

I know that the Manix is now discontinued and getting harder to find (plain edge anyway). My next knife is going to be the Caly 3 but want to know if I should then target the Manix as a must have in any knife collection. From the specs, this looks like a super heavy duty knife.

For those of you that EDC a Manix, which model do you carry most? Mini, full, or 83mm?

For those of you who used to carry the Manix and no longer do, what are you carrying now?

Let's hear your thoughts on this one. Thanks.

Manix 83 mm.
Got my brother one, and he went and bought a second one.
Considering he used to think of $30 as the most a knife should cost, that should tell you something.:)
MBC rated lock, sharp as hell, and looks more utility than tactical, while still looking "neat"; what more could you want?
Bit wide, but doesn't take up the whole pocket by any means.

The Manix is big and strong and build like a tank and sharp as heck,
but it weighs a ton and, therefore, isn't a real easy EDC.

It's a great knife but mine sat in the drawer because of its
bulk and weight. Ended up selling it.

The Chinook 3 is similar in many ways and a much easier carry IMO.

Manix to be discontinued??

damn..

well I've only handled one and it felt like a great knife if you're looking for a good cutter with no worries of lock failure. I have the chinook III which I carry more then a BM806. I like spyderco's g-10, steel and design better. Ironically, I ended up buying the 806 instead and now it collects dust.

I would get a Manix while you can.

I have one full-size plain edge...and for me a definite must-have. Discontinued yes...

Rumor has it a Foliage Green limited edition version is just out. There was a thread on the spyderco.com forum about it and how to get em...if you're searching.

I vote for the Mini Manix. I handled both and thought the Mini was a more useful package, felt better in the hand, plus the blade length is concealed carry legal here in Colorado.

This is my "if I could only have one knife" knife. It's built like a tank, awesome flat-ground leaf-shaped blade, doesn't look tacti-cool, and made in the USA.

Yeah, it's a bit heavy for EDC when compared with some other knives. But, it's a fraction of the other gear I usually carry.

Any truth to the rumor it's coming back as the next model of their foliage green G10/D2 steel line?

want to know if I should then target the Manix as a must have in any knife collection.

Can you please, clarify what is "must have in any collection".:confused:
I do not have it, do not feel that I need it and feel all right with my 40+ spydies.

I think that the Manix is a fine knife if you're looking for a heavy duty folder.
But I can't say if it's a "must have" knife.
I suppose it depends upon what you collect....
If you collect USA made Spydercos, then yes, you must have the Manix.
Or if you collect G-10 Spydercos, or flat-grind Spydercos, or leaf-blade Spydercos, or lock-back Spydercos, etc....

For those of you who used to carry the Manix and no longer do, what are you carrying now?
A Buck 110 from Buck's Custom Shoppe.
And just recently I picked up a Boker Drop-Point Trance (designed by one of our fellow forum members IIRC).

I bought one at Bloomingdales, since it was such a novelty. It's a great knife/ conversation piece, but I've carried mine all of twice. If you don't need the extra build quality, you don't want the extra bulk. Short of battoning wood in the middle of winter in some desperate survival situation, you would be better off with a Millie.

However, for the serious Peter Parker type collector, it is a must have, and it will definitley apreciate in value (it was selling all day long for $99 on ebay before it got clipped, now anything below $130 is a steal, and that's only been 6 months or less)

I'd wait for the FG version myself.

I guess I meant that from reading this forum it appears that there are certain knives that everyone should at least try out, if not purchase. (Example: Buck 110, Native, Delica/Endura, BM710, Griptilian, Spyderco Miliary, SAK, etc.). Ones that people agree will not likely ever be sold or traded. I have no real knife shop anywhere near where I live to try them out for myself. I found an on-line dealer that appears to have a plain edge Manix and Mini-Manix with a pretty good price, so before they are too hard to find, or too expensive, I wanted to hear what others thought. Thanks.

Yes! Pick up the Mini-Manix while you can. I hadn't handled one before I got one from a fellow forum member, and I laughed when I opened it up. It was so much bigger than anything I had carried before. I figured: "I'm never gonna carry this thing around!" Less than 2 weeks later, it was my primary EDC.

Yep, yep , yep, get em before they're gone!
To the OP; you owe it to yourself to get one and see if it IS one that YOU need.

The foliage green sprint run is the C95 "big" Manix, not the C101 Mini Manix. The blade is S30V, not D2, and PE. It should be available very soon.

FYI, the "Mini" is the 83mm, so there's only 2 versions. I've owned both, I prefer the Mini. But after I got my Paramilitary and CF/ZDP Caly 3, the Mini Manix started to get less and less pocket time. I eventually sold my Mini Manix, but only because I needed the money and I wasn't going to sell the Para or Caly 3. And while I know I'll miss the Mini, I don't think I'll be spending the money to get another one. I have too many other knives I want to buy.

I had a friend break off the tip of my Manix. The tip doesn't look like it was designed for hard use, however the rest of the knife does and I'm sure the tip was never meant to be used for prying, regardless of how "light" my friend told me it was. One of the best things I loved about the Manix designs was the ergos. The ergos was better than my Para and my Caly, but the space it took into the pocket eventually began to make me shy away from EDCing it as much as the other 2.

Overall, IMHO I think the Manix/Mini should be held at least once.

Under those criteria, you need not bother to get one.

It is a great knife. If you need (or want!) a big beefy cutter the Manix will serve well. I carry one in my jacket pocket and it is very happy eating cardboard and performing other odd jobs.
