Is the Manix a "must have" knife?

For those of you who used to carry the Manix and no longer do, what are you carrying now?

Let's hear your thoughts on this one. Thanks.

Because I found the Manix didn't fill any of my needs better than smaller, lighter knives like the UKPK, Tenacious, Stretch 2 etc. I love the Manix for it's big, comfortable handle and the blade shape, but the UKPK does everything I need a knife to to and does it better, short of chopping and batoning. Then again I don't usually need to chop and baton with my Spyderco folders. ;)

If you need a very tough, heavy duty knife that still cuts like a knife, the Manix is wonderful. Just make sure you really want / need the extra heft and dimensions.

Otherwise for EDC I think there are more suitable pieces out there, such as the previously mentioned Stretch 2.

I just got my Manix today (friday 5-2) in the mail from a forum member and it's awsome. It is combo edge and badass.

The handle is great, almost like an Emerson (sal forgive me :o) with the blade of an enlarged caly 3. The tip is thicker than my Military and doesn't seem as fragile. Tough knife, and the finger choil is great for small up close tasks.

I don't mind the weight at all. I'd rather have a tough, beefy knife than a lighter, fragile one. It still takes up less pocket space than my D'allara, and it has a blade as sharp as the Millie. The blade on this is thicker than the military hands down. The tip on the Manix is about as thick as the part of the Millie 3/4 - 1" before the tip.

Excellent knife and I always love Spyderco's lockbacks. Strong, simple, and ambidextrous. Great knife and it will definitely take the place of my Millie and D'allara.

(I'm probably going to cut and paste this post in a new thread :D)

I have both sizes and the larger one was my EDC for over a year and is still in the rotation. I will probably buy 2 of the foliage green sprint run. I love the manix and I am sad it was discontinued.

I consider my Endura as a 'must have' but my Manix is a close second cause of the weight issue. I like the blade of the Manix and feel it's a good cutter but the Endura is a lot easier in the pockets and for some, comfort is what matters in the end of the day.

+1
well stated

Under the true classic criteria like the Buck 110 ,BM710 ,Endura ect you probably do need either a Manix or Chinook. I have a Chinook3 which I think is the best of the beefy G10 backlock knives. I also think you need a wicked full serrated model as well like a Police or Civilian.

I am not sure why the military lovers prefer the linerock to the backlock on the Manix?
I have always found backlocks to be much stronger and lock up better. Linerlocks are nice and smooth and I can see it on a dressy custom but not for a tactical or heavy EDC knife. I guess I may have to buy a Military to find out.

No, not a must-have. Buy the Caly first, then see if you feel like you need a knife with more bulk.

For me, must have classics (similar to Buck 110) are: Delica, Endura, Police, Paramilitary (or Military). Even though I haven't bought a Paramilitary (yet).

For comparison to the Buck 110, I'd recommend the Chinhook. I just recently purchased one. It is a great knife, and I have always loved the blade shape.

I didn't have time to expand earlier but the manix is a definite must have if you spend much time doing heavy work. I have carried it for a long time and it is my favorite Spyderco folder by far. The blade shape, the steel, the ergonomic handle, and the lock along with that awesome flat grind make for a really incredible knife. It just gives me quite a bit of confidence in gear when I have it on me. All that being said it is a beast to carry because of the size and weight. I only carry it in the woods now. I am thinking the FFG endura might also be quite a performer, though not a Manix. I would love to know when the Foliage Green Manix will be out.

The Chinook3 is my fave but a lot of people prefer the leaf shaped blade on the Manix.
Both knives remind me of the old style folding bowie's.

I think the reason some people don't see the Manix/Chinook as a must have knife is they don't really appreciate the MBC blades. I am a big MBC fan and have recently got into the more utilitarian spydies because of how amazingly good and useful the blade geometry is. I have a lot of expansive knives but the only expensive folder I kept after I got the Chinook3 and the Police for MBC is a Lambert custom that is more of a gents knife.

One thing about the Manix is it is a top of the line MBC folder that costs a LOT less than most of t5he competition.

Had a Manix, and it was a swell knife. Sold it off a while back to help pay for a rifle. Then again, I am not really a collector. I only keep a couple folders in my "collection" to carry.
