Is The Yojumbo Worth $230?

Candidly, comparing a folder to a fixed blade is apples and oranges as far as I'm concerned. However, if you like the Yojumbo, there are few knives out there that look just like it, so it is what it is.

In any case, everything is more expensive now, so that's an additional understanding to take into consideration. Me personally, when I see people saying that things are overpriced, it usually means "I really want this, but don't want to pay what the company is asking for it, so I feel that they should drop the price to what I want to pay". Since that's an unrealistic expectation, it just comes down to: how bad do you want it?
The answer is "badly" lol

I enjoyed the size over the Yojimbo 2, though I think it could have benefitted from the refinements of the Yojimbo 2. Both of mine have been traded away at this point, but they were great knives.

I know that tops knives generally use 1095. Truck springs 5160 steel and sometimes I prefer 5160 to 1095 in big knives 😁 Jokes aside, of course, just because it is 1095 does not mean that its price should be low. Tops makes great knives and I think they're generally worth the money.
I like TOPS, and I don't think they're overpriced. OP seemed like he was trying to understand why a folder would cost as much as a big nice fixed blade.

WT = WTG, right ?

They do use great steels, you’re just looking at the wrong knives.
I've always like their designs, briefly owned an Elbrus back in 2020 but ended up selling it for something else. I wasn't criticizing the steels they use. I like 1095, SK85 and K340 just fine in fixed blades.

You should check out SHF and Les George 😁

Sorry but I think the sebbie looks twice as good or more. There is just something about that clean n timeless design. And now with MagnaCut at 64 hrc? It's very hard to beat IMO.

I have a tanto Inkosi, and I still say check out the competition 😁

I'll admit it's a slick looking knife. But for just a bit more you can get an amazing chopper from WTG, or at that price point, any of Tops coolest knives, a 940 Osborne, etc.

So anyone who has one, why'd you pick it over something else? Is it worth the price?
Shop around . For about $110 you could crab a Cold Steel "Frenzy" . At top :

Great materials , best lock available , 5.5" blade . Much more potent fighting knife than the Yojimbo , IMO .

If you want a Spyderco ,you pay their price . With Cold Steel you can usually find a bargain ...eventually .

I also check out other stuff, but not unless I really like what I'm looking at. ;)
By checkout do you mean look at on the internet or check out in hand?

My Sebbie is just breaking in and I love it but Les George is incredible and shf is next ion my list.

If ya haven’t checked out in hand I highly recommend it! But don’t get me wrong, if ya only ever have a sebenza ya still in great shape.

While I like the Yojimbo 2 a lot, the steel (S30V) has been horrible in mine. It just chips over and over, about to lose the tip on mine because of it. I think with how thin behind the edge it is, it would benefit from a tougher steel. I'm hoping to get one in CPM-Cruwear or CPM-M4.

Yes pictures, if I dont like the looks it stops right there. There are more than enough knives I like the looks of so dont worry ;)

I do think the Yojumbo pricing seems too high when you compare it to the Yojimbo 2. I doubt that it really costs that much more to make the knife a little bigger. It's not as unreasonable a markup as there is between the Cold Steel Large aluminum Espada and Extra Large, but still... maybe it's because it doesn't have nearly as much sales volume as the regular Yojimbo 2.

Also, the whole point of a wharncliffe is that it cuts like a larger blade since it doesn't pull away from the material at all, so I'd think the regular model is perfectly sufficient.

If you are into it, that isnt crazy money for a knife these days. 2 tanks of gas or 1/2 a cart of groceries.

That said, i had the regular Yojimbo for a while and never loved it so it got sold.

Yes - the Yojumbo is truly a unique knife. I use one in S30V for daily mail and box opening, and one in S90V for carry. But I like the blade shape and have 3XL hands, so YMMV. That’s an XM24 below next to it, for size comparison:

Sadly the s90v has been discontinued

The Yojumbo is worth the money, but it also has the ergos of a brick. Mods like DrubieG's are a fairly common solution. Most other USA-made Spydercos have the same basic construction, but with better ergos and a more general purpose cutting geometry.

Spyderco has the best intersection of price, quality, engineering and steel options currently available from a USA maker. As far as the other knives you mentioned in the same price range, they are not comparable to the Yojumbo in terms of what you're getting. Everything from TOPS is basically a truck spring. WT is just Taiwanese truck springs. The 940 is a whole lot less folder than the Yojumbo, and Benchmade is definitely not known for value pricing.
This answer ˆ I've bought, lost, destroyed or sold many many knives over decades. The ones that I EDC are Spyderco. They are simple and probably ugly, but work as a knife so very well. Of course they experiment with many interesting steels and are a very innovative company without following fashion or being pretentious. And because they don't seem like über premium or precious knives in materials, design or price – I don't mind beating the heck out of them. Like a Toyota.

This is so true, I just got a Sebenza at 500$. Add 60$ for shipping and add 25% taxes to that sum again.

Boy am I HAPPY CRAZY or maybe it is CRAZILY HAPPY. Either way I'm happy and to me the knife is worth the price.
After a year or so you forget what you paid for a knife. It's the utility and enjoyment that matters in the end. And almost all of them will outlast you. I've still got some of my grandfather's knives, and he died in the 70s.

If you can find a satin version of the Yojumbo it’s right at $200, which is only like $15 more than the satin YoJimbo. They charge more for the DLC
