There is debate, as with EVERY other weapon law on the books in the People's Republic of NJ, of whether or not the balisong can be considered to fall into the 'prohibited weapons' category of the knife legislation. And as a result, since a shop owner is typically not willing to get into a court case to set precedent, they just won't carry anything in the grey area. The law is simply not clear enough to take that chance.

Harry's Army Navy (now Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters for their fun stuff) in Robinsville, although providing a terrible shopping experience, has a large selection of knives on display and to try out. I would give them a call and see what they have or can order.

You might also try the flea markets like Englishtown or Collingswood. I have seen a ton of 'grey area' knives for sale by the private vendors.

EDIT: And just as a precautionary note, I am not advocating the exploitation of the 'grey area' in NJ weapon law. I choose to be on the prudent side of all of these things, since I am not willing to lose everything because I violated the spirit of a law even if I followed the letter of the law.

That's the main problem with New Jersey. You could get arrested, fined, whatever, for carrying a slipjoint. It's at the discretion of the officer, and there are some pretty bad ones in New Jersey. So you will probably not find many balisongs for sale in NJ knife shops, (if you even manage to find an NJ knife shop) because no one knows whether they're legal or not.

I was at harry's a couple month's ago. They have no balisongs. Their knives consist mostly of Buck, Lonewolf and Kershaw. They had a few Benchmades and one old Spyderco Delica looking sad in the case. They had tons of SAKs. I circled the knife counter at least 3 times and nobody asked me if they could help me and i had to track down one of the store employees. None of the knives really interested me so i asked if they carried any high end flashlights like surefire. They looked confused, had to ask someone else who replied with "we have maglites". It's not someplace i'd go back to.

Your shopping experience is typical. The counter workers are lazy and unhelpful. Their prices are also pretty high. They do sell surefire in the Cheyenne Mountain Outfitters store, they are in the back by the optics. Very expensive, even for in-store pricing, and limited selection. 6P, G2, E2D, and they had a C2-HA last time I was there.

As for their knives, it's the only NJ store I've been to with ANY kind of selection, so if I'm in the area I might stop in just to fondle the goods and see how I like them.

If you can get out to Lancaster PA there's a great dealer there with a huge selection, http://www.countryknives.com/ most of their prices are close to MSRP so it's not worth ordering from them online but man they have everything there if you want to get your hands on a knife. I had a great shopping experience there except for spending $90 on one of the FFG delicas.

Just wondering.... is there something that is preventing you from just ordering balisongs on line??
