Is that the correct spelling? It is a long time since I read "Billy Goat Gruff"

http://www.bladeforums.com/ubb/Forum41/HTML/000693.html I do not want to start any thing but this post seemed to be from someone who did want to start something.

I have never been a great knifemaker but I know many of the great ones very well indeed and I am sure that none of them would consider that this fellow could kiss their asses enough for them to tell him how long it takes to make a great knife or how much money they have in the bank or how often they make love to their wives.

Could I be the only one who sees this as a rude question, put in a really rude manner?

If he thinks great knives can be made in a couple of hours, why is he not making knives?

Another question. What is the meaning of the green grinning face?

A. G.

No A.G., ElvisLives isn't a troll. The big green grinn
biggrin.gif
is a way of showing hyperbole, or just being an ass. For example, I could say, "A.G. told me I should buy knife XYZ, but what the heck does he know about knives anyways?

"

When he says a couple of hours, he realizes that most hand made knives take much longer than a few hours to make!

If you want to see what a troll is, go to the Strider forum and read the posts by Assassin right now. THere is a link in that thread to the famous "Mall Ninja" saga, which I read for the first time last week. I had to stop 3/4 of the way through the saga from fear of dying of laughter!

A.G.,

Its not a troll just one of the oldtimers with a little tongue-in-cheek (definitely no pun intended) language. The question usually comes up on the forum about once a year. The answer is usually someting along the following lines:

A basic knife can be cut and assembled with a few hours. However, when we factor in preparation time, the procurement of raw materials and tools, the heat treatment, the manufacture of a sheath, marketing and sales, and general business requirements; the knife maker time is at a premium, and the delivery interval for the knife is consequently much longer.

A.G. :

I too suspect an ulterior motive in that question. I also think it could have been posed differently so as to avoid the risk of insult to those who might respond.

Whether or not it is an example of "Trolling" is subject to interpretation.

No AG, Brandon AKA Elvislives isn't a Troll. It's common knowledge around here that he isn't one of "sharpest knives in the drawer" if you get my meaning? But, he was probably just trying to be funny, (ie the 4

) or cute or he was just bored out of his mind.

There's certain guys that post here that you just don't want to take too serious.

Thanks fellows, I am happy to have been wrong and I will take a look at the suggested link so that I can see what a troll really is.

A. G.

It looked like a troll to me too at first: insulting and fishing for a war on the labour and cost of popular customs. But I guess it was just a little on the awkwardly-expressed side. You have to take into account who posted it and that person's record here and interpret accordingly. Maybe that will get me the benefit of the doubt when I next put my own foot in it.

Or should I say,

Uh..I think he's just bored.

We've got a whole weekend in front of us, and there's not many interesting posts coming in.

Maybe we could start a good old fashioned 'Sebenza vs the World' type thread.

Or how about one of the...
"Which knife would you use to cut off your arm so you could carry the auto that you got in the mail by mistake from an unknown source" thread?
Feeling a little lonesome, too...

George, your advice is as impressive and as elegant as your knives.

Hmmm...

If you're online, and you're bored... I think it's time to log off. There's a world out there, you know. Go cut something.

Good Evening Mister Russel.
It is I, THE GREAT AND POWERFUL VAMPIRE GERBIL!

I commend you for asking if DeadElvis was a troll before ripping into him. As was mentioned previously, DE is indeed a regular member that means no harm. What one must understand is the fact that he has taken that Elvis thing so far, that he actually emails the White House, demanding that President Nixon update his DEA badge.
The Secret Service has visited him many times, but they were so freaked out by him doing Karate moves while smearing peanut butter and bannanas on his chest hair, that even THEY refuse to visit him anymore.

Anyhow, it was cool of you to check before attacking...
Some of the members here can be quite odd at times, and shock the sensibilities of the sane members, such as you and I.

Off to wax my dogs' legs,

Crayola, That "Mall Ninja" thread is hysterical. I split a gut. I highly recommend it to all.

What's the point.

I try to pose a question, in a very lighthearted manner, that would give people great insight into how hard knifemakers work and how little they really get paid for the work they put into their knives.

I said "1 of your most popular knife". I'd think that any knifemaker who'd been at it a while would readily be able to show that the knife you pay $XXX.XX for actually took XXX hours to make, and therefore the knife maker was making $.XX per hour. Curse me for exposing the dastardly knifemaker.

We're talking forging and grinding steel for goodness sake, and you're accusing me of being a troll for not making the question more delicate?

And what's with the reference to "money they have in the bank" or "how often they make love to their wives"? You really think that's a rational line of thinking? I ask a man how long it takes to produce an item he sells on the free market and you compare that to me questioning his net worth or sexual habits?

VG might thank you, but I say if you have anything to say just ask me to my face.

Sheesh....

Oh, by the way, wouldn't this qualify as a "No Knife Content" thread to be moved to W&C?
