Is this a Troll?

Elvis:

You can't simply divide the price of a knife by the number of hours it takes to build it and come up with "the knifemaker makes $X.00 per hour." There's a lot more to the equation - like the cost of materials, abrasives, and "overhead" ( machinery, electric, insurance, etc.)

I guess I should have mentioned that instead of clowning around.

Anyhow, Elvis - Thank you!...Thank you very much!

What's the point.

I try to pose a question, in a very lighthearted manner, that would give people great insight into how hard knifemakers work and how little they really get paid for the work they put into their knives.

I said "1 of your most popular knife". I'd think that any knifemaker who'd been at it a while would readily be able to show that the knife you pay $XXX.XX for actually took XXX hours to make, and therefore the knife maker was making $.XX per hour. Curse me for exposing the dastardly knifemaker.

We're talking forging and grinding steel for goodness sake, and you're accusing me of being a troll for not making the question more delicate?

And what's with the reference to "money they have in the bank" or "how often they make love to their wives"? You really think that's a rational line of thinking? I ask a man how long it takes to produce an item he sells on the free market and you compare that to me questioning his net worth or sexual habits?

VG might thank you, but I say if you have anything to say just ask me to my face.

Sheesh....

Oh, by the way, wouldn't this qualify as a "No Knife Content" thread to be moved to W&C?

Elvis:
If I could spell apolilgize, I would. I did not set out to offend you, I thought it was a fair question and it seemed to me that if I asked it in your thread that that would look like a challange.
It would be embarrassing for many well known makers to tell you that when all the costs have been considered they can only clear $6 or $7 dollars an hour for their work. Most of them make knives because they love doing so and have really great wives who put up with low incomes and otherwise help their husbands. Ed Henry for example would have starved if his wife had not been a highly paid executive.
While I am sorry I upset you, I have to deal with a changing world, In the one I grew up in it was rude to ask a man how much money he made.
all the best, to you and to all the friendly people who thought my question a fair one. A. G.

Elvis... Take a deep breath and DON'T leave the building !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read nothing 'trollish' in you post. It seemed to me from the start that the point you were trying to make is that in many cases knifemaking is a "labor of love". Because the price of a piece divide by total number of hours ( starting w/ ordering material thru shipping to customer) may very well NOT make one rich.
You seemed to be saying that these highly skilled craftsmen may even in some cases be UNDER- PAID, if you work it out to an hourly wage.
How many of us would continue our work if we were under-paid????????? Probably not many.

This was a good post Elvis. It inspired thought.... Keep it up..............

AG <> With all due respect to you it may be that you owe Elvis an apology in this case.

Your probably a bit older than I am and I suspect that computers may not be you strong point(I know for a fact that they are NOT mine). I base this totally on the fact that you did not know what the "green faces" meant. I had no earthly idea either till about three weeks ago when I asked here on BF and someone told me.
So if you will just click on 'smiles legend' just to the left of where you type your reply the list will come up.

I really mean no disrespect in this reply. I have bought knives from you before and will keep right on buying them. The 'DEER HUNTER' is great, I have several.
Keep up the good work and have a nice day.

If my assumption about you and computers is wrong, I'm sorry. I'll be the 'ass'.

Seems a blatant case of misunderstanding. You misunderstood the intent of my question Mr. Russell, and I misunderstood the intent of your response.

My apologies for my misunderstanding as well.

As fer the rest of you lugnuts, show's over, on yer way.

No seriously, glad to know I'm among friends here!

Thanks!

I personally like trolls, but it never occured to me that Elvis might be one.

AG, best to ask friends via email if you have a question about someone's intent rather than starting a completely new thread about it.

This troll thing is sometimes hard to define. I didn't think Elvis' thread was trolling, but I and other veteran members of this board sometimes like to start Provocative threads just for fun. So it can be hard to define a troll thread. If the guy is a newbie, a provocative thread will probably be seen as a troll. A longtime member is probably just fooling around, or, as in this case, the written word simply does not adequately express the thoughts or intent of the writer to all readers.

So many people have misread things that I have written that I stopped worrying about it, especially because I have a penchant for playing around with words and you can never make yourself completely understood to everyone unless you are face to face and can properly bash them on the head with a club. Nobody can mistake the meaning of That.

I value your's and Elvis' contributions to BFC. I'm glad this thang got sorted out.

Well, I sure are glad that this worked out without having a nasty argument ensue.

As you know, I am a devout pacifist and feel greatly saddened whenever I see our fellow/chickbabe forumites fight.
("Chickbabes" is the new PC term for broads... I checked)
That is why I never, ever resort to arguments with ANYone.

Wanting to call for group hug, yet knowing that DeadElvis would cop a cheap feel from me,

The first knife was probably used to cut stuff.

VG- Wouldn't you simply exude mayonaise and jelly in a group hug? (That would be a "cheap feel!")

Anyways, I promise not to start a thread asking Elvis how much he makes an hour. (JUST JOKING FOLKS!

Let's close this thing down, now that everybody has the warm and fuzzys. Good job by all to keep this a positive thread and extending the benefit of the doubt!
