Is this bowie really a pre-factory BUCK?

thanks Mr Levine for the up dated picts!
yes i think it is real as have seen a few older knives from chuck and frank..
joe will likely be along soon to have a peak also..

WOW...that looks VERY well made, and based on Joe's information, very possibly made by Frank Buck.

It is COOL whatever the origin.

Thanks for posting the new pictures Mr. Levine.

Thanks for sharing better pics of this one. I'm with Joe, the red bone hard spacer material and tang stamp make it look Buck. That fuller is one of the biggest I've seen.

Do you think it is likely that way back when, that some one would counterfit Bucks name on it? I mean, would it increase the sale price that much at that time? Just a thought.

I've posted pics of this knife before but it seems appropriate to this thread.

A couple of observations:

1) While this knife is COA'd by BKI, it does not have any "BUCK" stamp on it at all. This may not be unusual since this was a prototype of a knife Frank made to order.

2) The finish work on this knife and the construction seem of a much higher quality than the knife that is the subject of this thread. Again, I draw no conclusions from the above but am merely pointing them out for furher consideration.

I'm looking at the sheath in the new pics...I see it has two sets of belt loops, plus the shoulder loop...

Is this a common style of sheath for big bowies??? That is, worn as an under-the-shoulder sheath???

I still don't see quite how you could pull it out...(when worn as a shoulder holster-sheath)...That might be why it's not sharpened... :)

Thanks for sharing the pictures w/ us Mr Levine.I'm with Joe,he should know. But the stamp is not inverted,as those of that era should be.DM

That is one humdinger of a knife.....and I'd have to vote that it's 100 percent Buck.

A treat to see it.

It gives one hope......maybe it's still possible to run into one.

Does anybody know "the rest of the story" on this one??

Did Levine sell it back to Buck?

The Rest of the Story, I don't know what story you are asking about? But, Levine had this up for sale not long ago on ebay. However, ebay closed the auction as the D-guard style knife is not legal is CA, so they said. I was watching that auction and was interested in how much it would sell for. Prior the auction getting closed it was at $800 the last time I saw it.

I have no idea if it was later sold or not. But, you have to admit that is one hell of a sweet old Buck knife!

I was thinking that the end of the story might be that it went back to Buck.

That would be a good ending, but maybe they already have some good examples of that type.

The pommel appears to have facets like a nut - does that imply it's screwed into a stick tang? I can't imagine a blade that large could survive use with a stick tang - could it?
