Is this fake?

See if a magnet will stick to the liners. If so, then it's a fake. Emerson has titanium liners. The pics look very legit. I'd say it's an Emerson.

the only thing i find odd is the grey disc.

other than that it appears to me to just be a modded 7. my 99 is tapped for both tip up and tip down. if this one is both, it is most likely legit, if it is tapped for only tip down, it may be fake.

the older models have much smoother g10.

my liners are the same thickness on both sides.

unless parts have been frankensteined together, id say it is from 1998-2000. good deal for $60.

The pictures are just not good enough to tell one way or the other.
There are a lot of very good looking knockoffs wandering around at cheap prices.
Emerson's linerlock uses 2 ballbearings, one on either side internally and as far as I know the fakes don't.
It's surprising that there are no markings at all on the blade.
Where's the logo?

the blade has been satinized. scotchbrite, belt sander, sandpaper, or whatever, could easily remove the logo.

not strange at all, really.

Its tapped for both that is for certain

based on this, i would say it is real.

i modified my earlier post, sorry if it was confusing. the benchmade models were the only 7's that were tapped only for tip down, afaik.

the early emerson made 7's were tapped for both.

seen separate, they appear to be the same dimensions. but side by side, there are other obvious differences between the bm and eki. the bm handle is slightly wider, the scale textures are different, and the grind lines are different, to name a few.

I believe in 2005 Emerson started using the flat head phillips screws. Prior to that they used a dome shaped phillip head. The thumb disk was bead blasted on the one in picture and the blade refinished. Great looking knife and a super deal for the $60.

Hi ickkey -

I agree - this is a genuine emerson - it is just an older model.

I have a 1999 cqc7 and it is identical (except of course for the polished blade).

The screws on mine are all rounded head, and the back-side of the blade pivot point is rounded and protrudes slightly as well, where the newer production model in the youtube vid is apparently a newer style of pivot hardware.

I wish I had seen this one for $60 first -

It is a very good knife for that price.

best regards -

I have studied Emersons for years and have an extensive custom Emerson collection. This is a REAL EMERSON. An older version, but it is real. It has been pimped though. For the price, you got a great deal. I put my money where my mouth is. If you don't want it, I will buy it (not that I need another one). Remember, people modify knives all the time, but based on the grind of the blade and the G-10, it looks real. It might even be a Benchmade, which would make it worth much more (my edc is an Emerson/Benchmade).

Thanks for the comments guys. I believe its a genuine emerson too. Obviously tooworks doesnt since he decided to send it back to me. I think i will take more pics of it when i get it back, any request to help verify?

I know i should get pics of the screws and the holes (for tip up or down), but anything else?

I might also have to included the pics to my sales thread anyway.

Thanks

both sides of the knife, complete, and the lock interface should give enough info to verify further, if necessary.

Hey guys. I am the guy who bought this and here are my concerns. I have handled Emerson knives and can tell you right off is just doesn't feel right. Also below I will list some issues that make me suspicious. Here is a good youtube video that has some up close shots to help reference as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emZNK_j_VWU

Issues I see:
1. The handle just doesn't feel right and the texture seems to be flat and not what I remember of the Emerson. Even on the you tube video you can see the texture on the handles, which are way better than this one.
2. The screw and thumb stud itself is black on all the CQC-7's I saw with a rounded screw used to hold it in place. This one uses a flat head Grey screw with a grey thumb stud.
3. I can think of no reason other than being a factory second that the blade would not be marked by Emerson, both the logo area and under the thumb screw. The blade does not show an different wear pattern from it being removed and anything of that sort.
4. The metal frame itself is wrong from what I've seen and even the youtube video comments on. In the video you can see that the lock side is 20-40% wider than the none lock side. This one is the same size on both frame sides.
5. The grain of the blade on the top is not what I have seen, and the bottom does not have any grind mark at all moving perpendicular to the blade. It actually has some sort of spots and weird texture I haven't seen before.

If one of you guys want this let me know. As oppose to you buying it from him I will just send it directly to you. HOWEVER my concerns have been noted and if this turns out to be a knock off do not come to me complaining.

I paid $60 so first one to tell me they want it gets it.

You obviously haven't done much research into Emersons or their history.

1) G-10 will smooth out over time. Emerson has moved to grippier G-10 over the years.

2) Emerson CQC-7's don't have "thumb studs," they have thumb disks. Emerson has used various color (polished or coated) thumb disks throughout the years.

3) The blade on the Emerson you bought has been given an aftermarket satin finish.

4) You're talking about the liners, and prior to around 2005-2006, Emerson used the same thickness of Titanium on both sides. Now, Emerson uses thicker Titanium (if available at the time of knife batch manufacture) for the locking side and stainless steel for the non-locking side.

5) Refer to number 3.

To the OP, sorry you had to go through this, but not all buyers do their research before making false accusations. Too bad, as you gave that guy a killer deal!!

The logo and thumb disk really mean very little as they are easily changed/removed.

This is my CQC-12, note the EKI logo, black thumb disk and wave....

This is that same knife now, note the lack of logo, silver thumb disk and lack of wave.

I could show you a dozen or more similar pics but it would just be more of the same.
The modding of knives is a poular thing to do now a days, Emersons happen to be easy to work on and easy to get so that is why you see a lot of them about.

God knows I have done a bucket load of EKI mods my self never mind every one else who works on knives, weather it be pros, semi pros or just people playing with a hobby.

This looks to be a real deal Emerson knives CQC7 to me. The texturing changes over time with use and for that matter on some of the newer models I've been mailed I've noticed the G10 looked slightly different than older models I've had sent to me. I had a 14 mailed quite recently that looked distinctly different and felt distinctly different than past ones I've worked on regarding the G10. With that said though, this is obviously a "pimped" knife. Someone satin finished the blade and looks to have done a good job at it. The metal lanyard can't be answered by your pics but the metal seen could very well be the liners. If it has the double detent ball system everything else looks real to me. G10 scales can be remade by even a backyard mechanic if he/she is so inclined. Trust me. :D Thats not an indicator of if the knife is the real deal or not. The fact is that the guy that bought the knife bought a pimped knife regardless of if it was the real deal or not. The blade finish and no logo should have been the indicator that you 'enter at your own risk' so to speak. So, unless you got a guarantee it was the real deal when you bought it you really have no complaint about whether its real or not at this point. Thats the risk you take when dealing in pimped knives that are no longer original factory set ups.

On the magnetic qualities of the liners, EKI hasn't used Ti for a couple years now on the non-lock side (5/12/07 was when Ernie announced it, but they used old Ti stock up through the year...) That horse has been beaten in to the dust... Magnet tests would be inconclusive, as the material for non-lock sides they use is a 300 series stainless, which is all but nonmagnetic due to the presence of nickel in the alloy. Here is a link from EKI that states they use stainless on the non-lock side... http://www.emersonknives.com/ekEK_FAQ.php#SS

I have a 2009 Mini CQC-8 and niether liner is magnetic? Could they have somehow made the non-locking side with Ti instead of 300 ss?

The 300 series stainless Emerson uses on the non lock side is non magnetic stainless. Its not going to react to a magnet anymore than the titanium lock side will. The only way to know if the non lock side is replaced would be the colors of the spark if you were grinding on it or if it would anodize and of course if it is replaced its likely it was done without the factory detent on that side. If the laser cut lines are visible along the spines of the folder liners you are probably looking at a factory liner. It is unlikely that anyone used a laser to cut out just one liner for one knife. That would be cost prohibitive beyond reason.
