Is this para 2 a fake?

I noticed 3 things when comparing to my blacked out PM2 purchased from BHQ:

1. G10 looks legit. The PM2's G10 is somewhat unique in that when it photographs it reveals a sub-pattern. Hard to explain but you will see it on PM2s, less so on Manix 2s, and hardly at all on other G10.

2. The Spyderco logo on your blade does seem to be closer to the thumbhole than mine is. I purchased mine about 18 months ago, so depending on when yours was made, it could vary. It could be a routine manufacturing tweak or a minor production accident.

3. the cutting edge on mine (shiny portion of the blade) is thicker and more uniform than what you have shown there, but depending on whether or not it was reprofiled by yourself or a previous owner, that could be meaningless.

Overall looks good, the hardware, G10, and jimping all look legit. I'll attach comparison photos of mine shortly. I think the differences are probably due to routine manufacturing variation. Your buyer should post comparison photos of his other PM2. His other one may be an older run or a fake.

whatever you do keep the pictures of the knife you sent him. And take note any wear on any points. Too many times I have seen guys claim fake but actually swap the knife out for the POS they have. he may switch the clip or other hardware to make it look like your knife. Im not saying you are for sure being taken for a ride. Just saying its possible.

If payment was made thru Paypal, notify them that you believe he may be trying to scam you by returning a fake. As I understand it, PP will not credit his acct until the knife is returned and you are satisfied.

[comment removed - upon further reflection I changed my mind. ;)]

It looks 100 percent real to me. I've had about 10 different real PM2s and it looks exactly the same. Just another paranoid flake freaked out by the countless YouTube videos and forum posts about fake PM2s.

as noted before, very slight differences in logo position and edge grind but I'm pretty sure those are just standard variations. The jimping on yours looks dead-on to mine, and that would be incredibly hard to mimic precisely. point your buyer toward this thread if he's still got heartburn.

The crazy part in all of this is that the fakes are getting that good that we have to consult each other about if one is real or not.

Here is his reasoning:
"The weighting on the blade is too big the spyderco symbol is not exactly the same the screws are not spyderco the clip has the spyderco symbol in the wrong area on it and the fake g10 scales are contoured wrong just go look on YouTube and it had all the fake wrrors on it."

is there any weight to this?
I intend on getting the knife back before refunding!

This buyer is either clueless or trying to scam you.

Exactly what I was thinking.

I bought a para 2 that was a fake once. Had me fooled for a few months it was so good. I never would have known until I sent it in to spyderco for some warrantee service. They sent it back to me unfixed with a letter explaining it was a fake. Best fake Id ever seen. Threw the knife away I was so mad.

If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the fake PM2 and what was the warranty service it needed?

I made the horrible rookie mistake and bought it off the bay. I was trying to change the scales, and when I tried to loosen the pivot, I stripped the pivot screw. I sent it in for a new pivot screw. I contacted the seller and was completely ignored. Like I said, I had it for like 3 months and it completely had me fooled. Not my first para either. Insane good copy. Scary really.

I'm wondering if the only way to stay ahead is for manufacturers to release different models (or existing once slightly changed) every year and the customers buying the new ones only. This way before a new fake can get a hold in the market it will be obsolete again.
This greater fragmentation and customers preferring the latest less likely fake one would make batches smaller. Thus it would be less lucrative for a faker to copy last year's model if there's already a new real one on the market.
Kind of trying to outrun the fakers.

I believe that to some extent, that's already what production manufacturers are already doing, although not purely for the reason of fighting counterfeits. Spyderco in particular does this with their iterative redesigns of several main archetypes.

Thank you all! The deal went south, I told him I would refund once item was received and inspected. I even gave him a link to this thread.
Either way, I received negative feedback from him.
I've done probably 200 online deals and only 2 have gone bad so I still trust in humanity :)
Thanks again!

Also, identify the correct Spyderco logo based on location of manufacture (i.e. Golden, Taiwan, Japan, China, and appropriate collaboration marks like Schempp). A Golden manufactured Spyderco should have a Golden pattern engraving of the Spyder. Each of the engrave/laser patterns is unique/different. Take a close look at a couple of current knives (Golden fairly smooth, Japan vertical, Taiwan circular from inside outward, China horizontal slightly angled). Well that's at least one option, except for older knives that pre-date the Spydie logo.

Thanks mate!
Nice to know there are a few other knife nuts on the other forum :)
Knife section aint too bad but I haven't been on there for a while. Trying to cut down on spending and these forums dont help!

I hear ya. I haven't really checked out the knife section over there but I think I will. I have the same user name on both forums, so maybe you'll see me around!

Sorry to hear about the negative feedback - can you "appeal" it any way with the moderators?

Did he expect you to refund the money before he returned the knife?

Take pics or video of the box opening when you get it back from him. Something sounds fishy here.
