Is this unusual?

Is it unusual to order a knife from a knife retailers website, pay for it and then get an email days later saying it is currently not available from the manufacturer? I would think it would be listed as out of stock or back ordered. This from a company that claims in their policies to update their online catalog daily.

"Unusual" may be the key word here. If the company does enjoy a good reputation and their updates are really usually very current, then maybe this one sneaked up on their blind side either from internal error or the fault of the Mfg. not notifying them in a timely manner.

Might need to phone and question what is up to satisfy.

Sadly, it is more usual than one would hope. Worst case is they take forever to get it in, or never do. Some internet vendors never have product in hand and wait until an order comes in, then have it sent to you from another provider. I would not hesitate to cancel my order and do business with an honest site.
all da best,
rats...

I've had that happen to me twice. from then on i only order from websites that actually track their inventory. It happens because Joe Schmoe wants to sell knives online so they put up the entire distributor's catalog on their site and order from the distributor as you order from them. it takes longer for you to get your knife and they don't pull down discontinued knives until someone poor guy like you happens to order one. I stick with a handful of sites that actually track their inventory and ship quickly.

To answer the original question, mistakes happen, and I wouldn't blacklist a dealer for messing up on availability. BUT he should never charge you until the knife ships. To me, charging before shipping is fraudulent, and I would want the charge reversed immediately, or see my credit card bank about getting it removed.

I did ask that my payment be refunded to my paypal account. It has been a rather frustrating experience trying to get my refund. I appreciate everyone's response.

The funny thing is, I can still go to this dealers website and order the same knife that I bought that he couldn't send, cause he can't get it from the manufacturer. He shouldn't ,IMHO, keep selling or even allow to be ordered by a customer, what he cannot deliver.

Open a PayPal dispute. Tell them he said it's not in stock and hasn't refunded your money as you asked. As soon as he sees that, you will find he's refunding your money.

Any more hassles from him, post the company name here.

Well, after numerous emails and even talking to him on the phone. I did open a dispute with him and he got mad, so I escalated it to a claim. Paypal got involved and now I have my money back. What a terrible business transaction that was. I am glad it's over.

So he really was a scammer.

You could help a lot of other people by naming him so no one else gets taken.

I reordered the knife from Knifeworks. I have read good feedback on them here.

I hesitate to mention the retailer's name because I have read good feedback on him from another thread. According to that thread, it is a well established business with at least some happy customers. I believe my experience is the exception and not the norm. I will however not hesitate to lambast this individual [figuretivly speaking] if I read any negative threads about his business in the future.

No need to wonder. I'm the retailer in question. I won't bother with the "other side of the story." There is no point to it. He won't be back to my site. That makes both of us happy.
