That would make great smoker chips!

You could also grind it up, glue it back together, and use it like MDF.

OR, you could send it to me and I'll get rid of it for you.

are you serious- i kinda thought it would make some good handles but i had my doubts. oh well ill just use it as smoker chips- thanks for the advise-marekz

too late i just chain sawed it into tiny pieces--darn it-- ive never heard of anyone using some highly figured black ash burl for knife handles. darn it-marekz

i dont know, i have a wood bandsaw that ive not even put together-so i really dont know how to cut up a burl. i was going to practice on some cherry burl first. i was thinking of cutting it into like 1 1/8 thick slabs then cutting it up into like 3-4 block pieces-then stabilizing-then sanding and finally cutting it into 1x1.5x5" blocks. im really nervous about it. my shop still needs to get wired up. my basement shop is currnetly out of comiision so im just waiting. i really hope i dont mess things up but the cherry burl i have plenty of so ill just practice. my biggest concern is how much extra i need to leave for the stabilizing and sanding and still end up with the correct size. thanks marekz

Drop Burl Source a line, he does that stuff for a living. I'm sure he'll point you in the right direction.

My best knife has a stabilized black ash burl handle - very nice stuff !

If you really don't want to fuss with it......I'd be more than happy to give you $20 for the block to save you the fuss of messing with it.

if you guess how much i really paid for it ill give it to you murphda2.-marekz

I hope you can get some good advice from someone with experience at this, but I will go ahead with my $0.02 worth. When I sliced up a piece of customers figured pecan I didn't leave it near thick enough. I had a hard time getting pieces big enough to split for scales that weren't warped or twisted from the drying. I did finally get them and it looked a lot better than I ever thought pecan would look, but I sweated bullets for a few months while that stuff curled and warped. If you are going to cut it, I would cut it thick rather than near the final size you want.

my friend had a 80+ft pecan uprooted in a storm. he out of town for 2 weeks. i wonder if the wood will dry and start splitting before he gets back to cut it up. i havent seen it but from a picture-its big. pecan in general is a good wood but i havent seen any figured pieces. im hoping to get a few feet of it--marekz

I wouldn't put that piece of wood in my pit,I prefer mesquite. Just grind it up for mulch:rolleyes: Nice find. And cut oversize for stabilizing.

Black ash burl is one of my favorites. Let it dry just like it is for a long time before putting a saw blade to it. Then, cut it in half and check with a moisture meter. If OK, cut into 4" thick slabs, and dry for another 6 months. After that, check moisture and if below 10%, trim the slabs to square off the sides, and send them to WSSI for stabilizing. When you get them back you can cut them into any size and shape desired without worry of warping.

Mark,
That second pic there looks like jolly green giant's backside..... Stacy gave you some good advice, that stuff cracks pretty easy.....Looks like a real nice cap there, but I still wanna know if you sniffed that "persimmonscherry" you had?

Larry

yes i did sniff it. my nose isnt very good. when i was a child i had a lizard come in one side and out the otter. anyway that der persimmon is a cherry burl it is. i did find some persimmon here in georgia but the heartwood looks tanish. i even found some on the ground that was spalted but beyond repair. live and learn. the most good stuff i found down here as far as burls is cherry. i found an oak burl but it wasnt anything special. they say you can find some decent maple burl here but i have yet to see one.All of the maple burl i have is from the west. anyway Mr. shaughnessy you saw that pic before havent you.lol--- marekz
