Is variable speed REALLY that great?

I started on a craftsman 2x42. I now have a Northridge set up for 110. The difference is night and day. Instead of fighting the belt speed, I can dial it in to something appropriate for the grit, operation, etc. If you are considering a 2x72 I would suggest going variable speed from the get go.
