Is your knife just a knife?

Is your knife just a knife? Is it only a tool to you? Or is it also a security blanket? I mean, a lot of us get upset about not being able to carry a knife here or there for a few hours, where we probably wouldn't have to use it anyways.

So if you don't like being without your knife, why is it?

Mine are definitely security blankets. Its the boy scout still in me -- always be prepared. I like the comfort of knowing I have it with me should I ever need it.

In addition, I revolt against the idea of others attemting to take away our natural liberties, among which I include carrying a knife.

XMP hit the nail on the head. I'll be first to admit that my knife is definately a security blanket as well as a tool. It's my vice, and definately a comfort to always know it's there. I've actually bought a cheapy when I didn't have my knife. It never happened again, mind you, but I couldn't stand the idea of not having one on me.

Man would a shrink love to get their hands on me. :D

I think I get so used to it being in my pocket that when it is not there, I miss it, or feel "naked." Kind of like if I take off my watch and forget to put it back on.

Sometimes It is nice to forget both and just have fun though!

to me my knife is much like my watch. I feel annoyed when i dont have it on. Its one of the main reasons i find it disgusting when you cant take a knife here or there. To me its like someone telling me i cant have my watch in those locations. I dont find knives dangerous, only people are dangerous. It only becomes a weapon in the hands of a person that want it to be a weapon. But a large stick or a rock make pretty good weapons too=P

Also, a my user knives are kinda like old friends. I just enjoy having them around even if i dont use it. You never know when they might come in handy though=)

"We probably wouldn't have to use it anyways" is dangerous talk. No, I do not carry a security blanket in the form of a knife. Most of the time, my knives are used by people who didn't bring their own knife because they "probably wouldn't need it." I carry a knife because it is a sensible thing to have with me at all times. I do not not fall apart if I do not have my knife with me, but sometimes things I have to do are done much less efficiently if I do not have it with me.

When I find a knife that I really like, and I start carrying it everyday I form a bond with it. And just like a lot of other guys here I feel naked and unprepared. I've been known to turn around and go back to my house, making myself 15+ min late for work just to grab my knife hahah!

I'm not saying that we should have our rights taken away, just because we might not use it. I was saying that I feel an unreasonable sense of loss whenever I'm without my knives.

I agree with most everything posted so far. I've got a particular slippie that is like a 'worry-stone' of old. It will stay forever polished just from my rolling it around in my hand.

1 - You never know when you might need it. And I don't just mean, "just in case." I'm not talking about for some tiny mundane chore. As controversial as it might be, some of us do carry knives for self preservation. You're not going to get an engraved invitation to a violent mugging in which your mugger might decide, "Hey, if I kill this guy, I can get more cash when I fence his credit cards since they'll still be active for another 24 hours than if he reports them stolen."

Sound paranoid? Well, guess again. That's exactly what happens in some parts of America. One of the major networks did a story on this because it was rampant, especially in New Orleans. For some of us, I'ts not a "security blanket" or a crutch. I don't think my Emerson Mini-Commander is a magic wand that I wave around to "scare the bad man." I practice drawing it so the Wave feature engages reliably. Plus I have training in Knife Combatives. Even though you didn't mean to, your post came off quite offensive. Security blanket, indeed..... Children have security blankets to ward off imaginary monsters. This forum is full of adults.

2 - There's also the priciple of the thing. Most BF members can still remember when the world was less hoplophobic. When the "average" person carried a knife. And the ones who didn't, they were the ones who got the funny looks. Now everything is A$$ backwards! If you don't plan on going around stabbing a bunch of innocent folks with the knife you EDC, you should be able to carry it without being harassed by the cops or looked at as some sort of weirdo.

I am very sorry if I came off offensive, and maybe I shouldn't of used that term. You do know, I hope, that adults can have an item like a security blanket.
I, of course, am not an adult, so I only speak from what I have observed. ;)

 I thought I was the only one who used a slipjoint as a worry stone.

monocrom i agree with you 110% im younger than most you guys on this forums and im in high school, evertime im outside of school and use my knife around one of my freinds they think im some kind of schyco, never have i took it out to play with or to show off i always use my knife when it was needed, i hate the stereotype i get when i have my knife on me, criminals and un knife/gun educated people are ruining everything for the people like us

I agree with many of the reasons why guys like to have a knife with them and I will add that I like having something to "play" with. If I am waiting for someone or have time to kill I love to grab any old stick and see what happens. I have no talent but it keeps my ADHD brain busy.

Darthsoaker, this is a good post. If I took it beyond your intentions, my apologies. Closer to what your original question asked, someone on this forum some time ago gave the greatest answer, if I might paraphrase, "I carry a knife because God gave me weak teeth and short fingernails". I too don't like being without a knife for those reasons.
