Is your knife just a knife?

It's equipment

It's an article of dress too!

It's an article of faith.

It's a necessity, don't leave your house without one:thumbup:

I have carried a knife so long, that it is a part of me. I feel naked if I can't be with out it. It is a very useful tool to me.

Im ok with leaving it at home when I have to (at school for example). However on a regular day, if I forget it, I feel quite a twang of annoyance and it will usually bother me for the rest of the day.

My EDC is just a knife to me. I'm fond of it and would be sorry to lose it, but it has no "security blanket" or "freedom to carry" role.

I try to remember to take it to work (I have an Opinel in my bag if I forget), but I rarely use it except to open coffee packs. I try a bit harder to remember to take it when I go hiking, being one of the Ten Essenstials. I'll be sorry if there's an emergency and I don't have it, but in everyday outdoor situations there just aren't many things that need cutting. Backpacking for three days last Fall, I never used it once.

I feel completely different about the knives in my collection. As a group they are one of the most valuable items I own, both emotionally and financially. That collection represents a life-long hobby and I'd be devistated if something were to happen to it.

I carry knives because of the reasons stated above, but also I could not stand the ribbing I would get from people I know if they caught me without them. :(

Yes my knife is more than just a knife to me. I once left home without it and felt so un-nerved that I stopped at a WalMart and bought a Spyderco Native just to feel right. I rotate my edc about every 3-4 months or so.

I've been carrying a pocket knife for 8 years now and use it a few times every day. Usually in my shop class at school, the teacher knows I have it and actually asks to borrow it about once a week because he knows mine is sharper than his :) the other day I forgot it and had to jog home and grab it during first hour because I simply cannot get through my day without it. Probably 99% of the time my knife is simply a tool, but there's always those times when I'm walking around in the desert by my friends house and it's nice to know I have it. I also have a bad habit of opening and closing it, but that's simply b/c I need to have my hands occupied or my attention wander.

My knife is a part of me. Just as many responders have stated; " I feel naked without my knife.", I also feel the same. Even though there will be several days that go by where I never pull the knife from my pocket, I still feel like a part is missing when I don't have it on me. I know that this may sound foolish to some and even idiotic to others, but the question was asked and my answer has been given.  Good topic!:)

just a tool, but I like to carry one. I won't give any further justification than that, cause I don't think there is one.

When I was around 14 years old I backed off a sexual predator "adult" with a pocket knife that I was carrying. I did not become a victim because I had the knife. That memory stayed planted in me for the rest of my life. Now when my "responsible" nephew turned 15 years of age, guess what I bought him? A dependable pocket knife. He does not take it out to show off and he just goes out to play like all normal kids do. I know that if for some reason anything happens to him and he needs to protect himself he at least has a knife that will be able to help him until he can summon for help. Now as a responsible adult I carry a knife, handgun or both. It is my right as an American in which I gratefully served to protect our rights and still am doing now. Some say a security blanket? I say a way of life.

p.s.
Nine out of ten times you would not know that I carry a knife. I have a CWP and you might not even see the clip. For the handgun you will not see it unless I want you to see it. Ain't life grand!

I am very sorry if I came off offensive, and maybe I shouldn't of used that term. You do know, I hope, that adults can have an item like a security blanket.
I, of course, am not an adult, so I only speak from what I have observed. ;)

I know you meant no offense. But I'd be lying if I said that term didn't bother me at all.

You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. I look forward to reading more of your posts on BF.

I feel naked with out a knife or two (...or three). I use my leatherman just about every day at work (landscaping on campus) or at the apartment complex (my wife and I manage). It also gives me that "ready for anything" feeling. and more than once I pull it out to pass the time or clean my nails.
if I was a liger (lion + tiger) I proably not need a knife, but as Bumppo said,
"I carry a knife because God gave me weak teeth and short fingernails"

remember the movie "The Breakfast Club"...80's brat pack film

"why do you carry so much S H I T in your purse?"

"You never know when your gonna need to jam."

Knives rock, are the ultimate tool & necessity for survival, and just SHOULD be brought every where.

...There's also the priciple of the thing. Most BF members can still remember when the world was less hoplophobic. When the "average" person carried a knife. And the ones who didn't, they were the ones who got the funny looks. Now everything is A$$ backwards! If you don't plan on going around stabbing a bunch of innocent folks with the knife you EDC, you should be able to carry it without being harassed by the cops or looked at as some sort of weirdo.

I couldn't have said it better, Monocrom. I have carried a knife most every day for 43 years. If my grandkids don't see my knife, they will ask where it went. If I don't have my SAK and a lockback, I do indeed feel naked, because without fail, the day I don't have them, is the day I need them the most.

The world has become a rather silly place with all of it's 'political correctness' and paranoia. I just choose not to play and I will carry my knives until someone bigger and stronger takes them away.

A knife is just a knife to me, yes - but, "just a knife" is a critically important tool, and one you're likely going to need when you don't have it with you. In addition to being a tool, it can be used as a weapon if need be. I'd find it impractical to go anywhere without a knife of some kind.

Yeah, just a knife. I don't carry a knife most of the time. I had a leatherman micro on my keychain for a while, but the airport security took that. I have a CPL, but I don't carry a gun all the time either.

Well said. To some it is an accessory. To others it's a necessity. I have carried one since childhood. I see more and more people carrying now than I ever have.

With that said, it may very well be due to the pocket clip, which exposes the knife to the outside world. Back in the day it sat at the bottom of your pocket, unannounced and undetected until it was taken out for use, or the occasional saber rattling. I can't help but ask anyone I come in to conversational contact with, if I can see their knife if it is exposed at the top of the pocket.

I like the answers that have been given.

I carry a knife, or 2,3,4,5, well there are two blades on my Leatherman, wave and I have an Atwood tool on my keyring and another in my pocket, which by chance has a knife clipped to it. But I don't have a single weapon, they are all tools, although one or two of them could be substituted for a weapon if there was nothing more effective nearby. Honestly due to my lack of edged weapons training I think I would reach for a mop handle or pipe wrench before I drew my knife for defense.

I carry an edged tool because I like to be prepared, simple tasks like opening packages, cutting rope, cleaning fingernails, pulling splinters and many others go unnoticed when there is an edged tool available, and they become nearly impossible without one.

When I can't carry my trusty 110 I feel "Buck Nekkid". Thanks to Joe Houser on the Buck forum for that phrase.
