It followed me home (Part 2)

That's a score for sure. That will clean up nice - those things are prized by some. Do you think that some people let those or other tools go for cheap then look them up on the web?

You know, it's possible, but highly unlikely in this instance. The lady was apparently happy to keep it away from her grandson, who liked sharp things, and seemed happy to sell it. My guess is she has had it for a while and truly didn't care, or she would have looked it up already since it had a stamp.

I have no idea what it's worth, but I keep hearing they are popular right now.

There is a 30” octagonal handle out there that I could shave down to 26-28”. Figure it would be the equivalent of a boy’s axe sized double bit – little bigger handle than a cruiser, smaller than a full size.

This is the handle...

Look a little long?

Alright first picture post so I hope I got this right. This is a 3.2 lbs plumb head on a 32 inch handle. I picked her up at a local antique shop for around 13 bucks including handle, I was pretty stoked!

This is how it started out... ( I didnt get any good pics before I restored it.)

I found the photo from the link within your post, then right-clicked on the photo to copy the image location (which ended in .jpg), then Inserted Image into this reply.

Sunday before last, my buddy and I headed out looking for interesting finds.
I came home with an Old Faithful Warren double bit and a pretty worn cant hook.
Good day overall. One “antique” dealer was willing to sell me a fire axe for $135. Passed on that one.
He also mentioned someone cleaned him out the last weekend… Thought of Jblyttle.

Old Faithful.

The cant hook is worn but serviceable. I may try to vice the bolt bracket or introduce a washer on one side to “cant” it back in line.
There is some wear/damage on the handle but seems to stop at the head.
Not sure if I leave it, smooth it out, cut it off. A lot of the appeal on this one is the handle.
Any suggestions on that one are welcome. It’s OshKosh and I don’t know much about them.

Last Friday I stopped by someone’s house that looked like they were having a yard sale of sorts.
The guys were cutting a minivan into thirds with reciprocating saws and a sledge hammer.
He had inherited the property and was trying to get rid of all of his father’s stuff in the out-buildings.
There is a story there. Anyway, he picked up a Collins double bit from a cement slab pile. The handle is cut a little less than 2 feet, taped.
He assured me he has taken big trees with it. Interesting wedge material… I figure one of two things.

The other thing that caught my eye was this adze – Ship wright maybe? It’s marked J.B. Mc F. I believe.
Adze stories are good.

The cruiser I picked up at a shop in town on Saturday.

There is a logging supply a town away. I can stop and ask.

House handle and current producers may supply replacements for their main retail models. They aren't cheap though.

Did someone say my name?

All kinds of cool stuff in there, even 3 actual axes! A baby anvil, a big piece of RR track, loads of antique wrenches, hammers, clamps, that 5 foot saw that I know nothing about, an huge pulley, whet looks like a bone saw WTF? 2 huge chisels, a huge piece of leather, 3 huge industrial type magnets and the most interesting find was something called a Pry Axe, a kind of fire dept entry tool. Also included were 2 oil filled space heaters and an antique chair that I am going to gift to a friend. Everything was $100. There are things here that I would not normally take but the guy was begging me to take more as he needed to empty his locker by the end of the year. I was turning things down. Things like that pulley, the pipe vises, half of the wrenches and clamps I declined to buy and he just threw them into the pile.

I will probably stop these types of posts unless they are mostly axes etc, but I had to share.

What is that axe looking thing with the claw on the end of the handle? And is that a leather apron?

Well, what kind of axes are they? :)

A standard Vaughan 3.5lb Dayton on a 29" handle. Good used condition, an unknown wedged shaped head on a similar handle. Probably old based on design, someone cleaned it up. Best one is a partial label on a Collins Bonded stamped head, also a full sized Dayton on a 29" handle. Its not the find of a lifetime, but its a very good axe. If you were looking online at different price points, it would be probably a $40-45 axe.

That is the pry axe, also known as a Halligan bar. Interesting stuff, I've never seen one before. Its basically your standard issue fireman's break through/into everything multi tool. Not an apron, but a large firewood carrier. Now I can play with making some sheaths.
