Campbell Bros. XXX
Campbell XXX is a Canadian make, I believe from New Brunswick. They had an excellent reputation for high quality steel. Quite rare. Great find.

You mention Craftsman/Vaughan, are they the most recent American supplier to Craftsman ? Have you any idea who else supplied Sears?
More than most recent they're pretty much the longest relationship sears ever had.
They were supplying hammers and hatchets to Sears since the late 1800's long before they ever purchased the Craftsman name.
I don't know if there are Craftsman hammers and hatchets being produced in the US today but they'll be Vaughan's if there are.

Thanks, I guess that nice boys axe I picked up recently was made by Vaughan. It had the remains of a Craftsman sticker. You never know the life history of the axe , this one had hard spots. Bad grinding ? I had bought a couple of Sunflower brand files, made in India, chuckle, for just such occasion. One axe and the file went directly into the scrap iron bucket. I could have taken it to the bathroom and used it as a mirror. It was also on at least it's second haft , the haft had a Canadian Tire sticker.

I find tracking down the makers, and if possible the when, makes this rust hunting hobby more interesting. I get to see the history of tool making.

jblyttle. I also have a Dexter 48910, even has a tapered tang, and takes a great edge. Is that a puukko to the left of the Dexter? John

My Sunday fleamarket find was a unused 24" haft and a deep offset wrench for $5. What was amazing was how delicate it was , 3/4" x1 1/8" at it thinnest. He wouldn't go below $5 so I added the wrench. I've picked up a couple of axes using that same bargaining technique when the DB and a broad axe.

I love the mindset of getting the best deal possible, but I'd pay $5 for a vintage handle any and every day.

"I love the mindset of getting the best deal possible, but I'd pay $5 for a vintage handle any and every day " Those are .75 Canadian dollars.

A good axe handle go for $30 around here. There is still forestry happening locally. At three chain saw dealers, one didn't sell handles, another the bins were empty, only the third one had axe handles in the bins. The thing is, I don't have a boys axe without a haft.
